wiper woes 200

this happened when I bought the car in summer.....wipers ran slow and slowly got better.Took my 93 wiper fluid pumps and switched it out ...sprayed fine.I lubed the motor connector behind the glove box that helped.sprayed motor wire under hood with electric cleaner ,connection looked clean wires looked good.Lately I run the wipers and fluid every other day to make sure they operate.I lapsed and did not do it for over a week and today after a cold 10 degree nite I ran them and the wipers barely moved and window fluid did not work???I let the car run 20 min and everything worked again. The rear wiper works great, which makes me think the wiper stem control is ok? Any thoughts on this.Don't think I'll pass inspection with this as NH is pretty tough on inspections

As Dave says. The rotating shaft to which the wiper arms secure. The factory grease is at essence gone.

The caps, and I guess these are still available, on my 240s were shot. So, with wiper arm removed, I dripped drops of Mobile 1 15W50 so the oil seeps into the gap between rotating shaft and the housing. That is until you can get under the dash (or remove the dash as part of blower fan motor replacement) and treat all the wiper system moving parts.

If you have a wagon the liftgate wiper arm has two bronze bushings. One inside and one outside the painted sheet metal below the glass.

If the shafts are bad does that effect the wiper fluid from spraying?I am wondering if I am sometimes not getting enough electric to get wipers going

The little washer pump does not use much electric power, but if the wipers' mechanism is gummed up, their motor will take a lot of power to turn. Since the wiper and washer switch is supplied from the same source, sticking wipers can cannibalize power from the washer pump. Hard to see how it can go the other way...washers stealing significant power from the wiper motor. Could happen I guess, but I'd say, small odds.

Your best bet is to go with advice here to check out and free up your wiper assembly. A big clue is the increased resistance to their operation when cold. Grease and sludge thickened up. And check the fuse that supplies the wipe/wash system for corrosion, good contact.

I would check that the pivots for the front wipers work freely. Disconnect the short link to the motor and operate the wiper arms by hand. They should rotate without any resistance. If they are binding you'll have to disassemble them to lube the shaft. I made my own "umbrella" seals out of a discarded antifreeze container to keep water out. - Dave
