1980 240. Automatic.
Does the manual speedometer cable also advance the odometer?
Also, there are two wires (1 blue & 1 grey) that plug into the cluster at the speedometer.
What are these wires for?
Which one goes to the upper plug?

I had an odometer failure on my 1983. Let it ride for at least a decade without doing anything but finally took on the project after being handed a spare instrument cluster which made me feel more secure - if I hosed things up, I could at least recover with a working speedo again.

Rather than a broken gear, mine has a gear that simply slipped on its drive shaft as the shaft spun. Not sure about the 1980 unit but mine was fairly straight forward to fix following these steps (www dot 240turbo dot com/240-odometer-repair.html#1981-85_240). I purchased the replacement gears (I replaced both even though only one was bad) from here (m dot odometergears dot com/mobile/products/Volvo/Mechanical+Speedometer/10) since Dave didn't have the one I needed. Both places highly recommended.

No idea about the wires/cruise control.

Yes. If the odometer isn't working, the likely issue is a split plastic gear.

Cruise control pickup.

"Which one goes to the upper plug?"

The way I remember it dates back to the "War of Northern Aggression." The Blue wire is on the Northernmost plug.
