hi there. First time here, hoping I can find some answers. First off, the car. 1987 245, B230f engine. I believe it has the lh jetronic system on it. First off, the symptoms. Cold, starts right up then within a minute or so it will falter and then die. You can keep it running with the gas pedal and after a few minutes it will idle on its own, although a little roughly. After warming up it will idle fine, although seems slightly low. I am thinking the IAC because I used a piece of wooden dowell to tap on the IAC motor and when it started to falter I would tap the IAC and it would come back up for a minute before it started to falter again.
After doing this several times it would then continue to idle on its own. When warmed up, no problem. Starts right up with no problems. The car has, most likely over 300,000 miles on it. Due to the cost of a new one I thought I would see about cleaning it. Thoughts?, I am also going to clean the throttle body and replace plugs, cap, and rotor. Also, the black knob for the idle speed seems to have very little effect on the idle speed. Also, even after being fully warmed up, it has died on me when coming to a stop or slowing down for a turn, possibly due to low idle speed?
Finally, does any one know of a good tutorial on cleaning the IAC? I have not seen one for a 1987.
Ok, final question. Are there two coolant temp sensors, one for the computer and one for the temp gauge? There is one by the water outlet and there seems to be another one under the intake manifold.I have a manual, however it does not say anything about this. Looking forward to hearing back, thanks in advance for your help.
Jim.

Hey Jim,
Cleaning the AIC is a good idea. After going through a rough idle situation after warmup, I found that I had a vacuum leak in a hose that was fairly new. You can read my saga, with the great help from Art and Phil, here if you wish. Maybe something in it will be helpful.

Just to try and cover all bases...
Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

Yes, I have. Checked out good, however I will do further checking. Thanks, Jim

Hi CB Jim here. my apologies if I offended you. Certainly did not intend to. I know that technology can be great, however things can be lost in cyberspace. I will first answer your questions and also send my original post in case it somehow failed to get to you.
have owned the car for about 6 years, most likely 3rd owner. Was given to us by my sister in law, they had it for app. 3-4 years. Rest of history don't know.
definateley used, 1987.
My reason for thinking IAC is because of the reaction to tapping on the IAC.Also the car has probably 300,000 mi. on it. Odometer quit working at 217,000 mi. and
that was at leas 5 years ago and I am sure cleaning it would be good to do for that reason alone. Again, sorry if I offended you. Here is my original post in case it somehow got lost. Thanks, Jim

Jim, you did not offend me. Mainly because I never saw your response to my questions.
I just got busy. Just dropped in now to read it.
I must say I did not expect to be upbraided for my lack of attention to your reasoning. I thot I'd see a few lines about the car's history.
Re; Art's post. I may be a curmudgeon, but we are talking Volvo mechanical problems on this board. So my 240 is doing this, I think this this why, can anyonw confirm this line of thinking... To have your diagnosis questioned?
To not be socially correct. Oh my pass the smelling salts.

CB you ruffled his feathers. You see he ignored all your questions because you asked just one he already felt he answered well enough, blowing his good chance to extract some advice and experience from a long-time 87 owner. Kid gloves on line, curmudgeon after a smile.

I posted around a 150 to 200 word explanation as to why I came to that conclusion. Obviously for some reason or other you didn't get all of it. Another person who replied seemed to.

Yikes!! Stopped in to see what was going on today and after encountering this thread decided to go back home...................

Couple of quick thoughts.:
Definitely clean the IAC. That should clear up your problems. The stalling when slowing down could also be bad spark plug wires. How old are the wires? Have you checked them for arcing?

Will I buy another Volvo??? We'll see....

thanks for the response. The plug wires are less than 2 yrs old, same for plugs, cap and rotor are much much older though.
