Upper radiator neck snapped when pulling hose to remove radiator shroud - FYI 200 1990

In replacing a timing belt, a friend pulled the upper radiator hose to the right to lift out the radiator shroud. The upper radiator neck snapped and came off with ~1" of neck stuck in the hose.

I've seen several snapped/broken upper radiator hose necks over the years.

The message in this case might be to drain enough out of the cooling system to remove the hose from the thermostat housing and pull it gently aside.

Or remove it from the radiator as well - although I've seen necks break in trying to remove an old hose that's stuck. If the hose is bad and seems stuck, I cut it with a razor knife and peel it back.

(I repaired the neck with a copper sleeve and 2-part epoxy. I've also used a PVC sleeve. Yes, I know that's hillbilly - it's what we do here in SE OH.)

There is a radiator hose removal tool - here's a URL for a good one

there are many for sale on the web and auto stores.

I made one from an old screwdriver

Actually a blessing it snapped under those conditions rather than out on the road in the middle of nowhere.

Upper radiator neck snapped when pulling hose to remove radiator shroud - FYI 200 1990

I rarely bother to try and re-use a hose anymore. Well, for a long time now. I drain, cut off the one(s) that have to come off - and put on a new one. Just not worth the potential trouble nor the hand-slamming-into-something-hard-and-sharp-when-the-hose-finally-lets-go blood/guts which seem to often accompany the operation. Glad you got her back on the road.

How old is the radiator? 200 1990

You mean the hot coolant in port that the upper radiator hose secures to that also secures at the other end to the thermostat housing?

How old and what make is this radiator? Doubtful it is factory installed. A Nissens or Blackstone? Side plastic tanks?

    JB Weld?

    Thank you.

Yes, the upper-port on the radiator. Yes, plastic tanks.

I think this was Volvo but I've seen Volvo and aftermarket break.

I think we love to blame the radiator design for the neck breakage without casting even the least thought to the stress induced by stiff hose rubber and soggy motor mount rubber. Kudos for having the courage to trust a repair!

Yes, not uncommon on old plastic tank radiators. Not 240 specific...

My three 240s use the all brass radiators from older 240. Pressure tested and such. These also have the port for the aux fan temp sensor.

Though these are sealed. I should cap the auto trans cooling line ports, eventually, I guess.

Watch them motor / trans mounts. The engine sags rearward and so pulls on the large radiator hoses. More so the upper hot coolant out from the engine to the radiator hose then the cooled coolant radiator to wasserpumpen and grooven hose.

I recall someone making mention of a strong all aluminum radiator that fits 240. Aluminum makes for a strong radiator and better heat transfer? I cannot find the post jere, if it was here on your brickboard.

          Hope that halps.

          Happy Sat-Your-Day.
