driver's side rear window 200 1993

Hey Everybody or Anybody,
My driver's side rear window only goes down but not up. The switch works when I try it on other windows. The motor is good. When I bypass the switch and power it directly from the battery, it goes up and down fine (that is when I switch polarity). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Summer's a comin' and no AC.

Go to - descriptive detail files - in the 700/900 FAQ - see - window switch repair.

If your switches look like those shown, you can rebuild them.

If the switch works down, but not up, and the motor is good, the up contacts are probably burnt.

It is easy to repair the contacts by sanding them smooth ending with with fine sand paper, and a burnishing tool - this tool is finer than sand paper, it smooths and polishes the metal of the contact. Note the shape of the good contact.

DO NOT let the spring or other parts get away.

I also rotate the contact leaf as the down contact is usually in good shape.

If your master switch is like a 740, it has separate switches, each has a key on a different corner.

It is possible to remove the switch in the rear door, cut its key off, and install it in the master switch - this rear door switch is usually in good shape. Then the driver has to lower that window.

Because I had removed door panels before, I rebuilt all the window switches in about 2 hours.

A belated thankyou to all! ***I didn't know that the wires from the back switch change color to Blue & Gray when they pass to the front. Broken Gray wire. Had only checked red, black, and yellow. She work fine now. Thanks again BBers!

Had a similar problem year ago with my 90 244DL. Rear drivers door too.

Take out the switch and try spraying electrical cleaner on the wiring and switch. If you are ambitious you could remove the inner door panel, clean wiring with spray and test for shorts. I’m assuming you already cleaned the contacts and tried a different switch in that door. 240’s have really wonky electrical systems!

Thanks for the suggestions. Haven't cleaned contacts yet because they don't look dirty but will give it a try. Thanks again!

Hi,

You might read about smut in a magazine but smut is all it takes to make these switches not work!
The relays have got to get enough current, through a coil of fine wire to make magnetism!

Have you tried your other windows? Do they all work fine?

I had an issue on mine where the master switch would only let the windows go down, but to roll them up I had to press the corresponding window’s switch, e.g. press the left rear window switch to roll up. Alternatively, I could fiddle the connection until it worked. Not fun when it’s raining or cold - or both! I solved the issue by getting a whole new master switch. Now all is fine and dandy.

I would try getting a new switch from eBay or a pick and pull.

Thanks for the reply! Woh, I thought my situation was weird! I did just get a used master switch which I believe is fully functional. I'm stumped. It's acting like it's the switch but...still scratching my head.
