PCV Oil trap 900 1997

Hi all,

After 22 years I removed the oil trap just to see if it needed any cleaning... guess what, it did not. :)

However, I have a question for you:

When I have removed the oil trap, there was black sealing material between the bottom of the oil trap and the crankcase.
I am not talking about the green O-ring, it was all over the touching surface of the oil trap with the crankcase.
It is elastic and very difficult to remove with any solvent, similar to dry silicon.

What is that material?
It is factory stuff as I never touched the oil trap before, which means if it was there, has a purpose.

What can I use to replace it?

Thank you,
Alex

Hi Alex,

According to 940 factory parts diagram, there shouldn't be any black sealing material anywhere around the oil trap. Only an O ring should be there. Early O ring was black in colour, later they used green for more oil resistance. Current OE replacement oil trap kit comes with green O ring. I've seen cracked oil trap cases before and this normally should be replaced. Could be the sticky black thing was used to seal a crack. Also I've seen RTV smeared all over the bottom of oil trap by some non-Volvo mechanics to prevent leaks. Anyway you may find similar black substance in hardware stores.

Amarin.

Amarin,

Thank you for your reply.

I am replacing the green O-ring, however the oil trap has never been removed before, it came from the factory that way.
My car is a 1997, it might be something they did on the latest models?

Alex
