240 Moonroof Seal or Gasket Piping 200

Short question:

What do you use for the 240 moonroof seal, what may be named a gasket. What do you use as a successful adhesive.

Yes, I imagine without factory quality parts and materials enduring success is a mythos.

Sunroof is glass and lets sunlight in. Moonroof is a panel usually made of body panel material like sheet steel on 240 with finish. So far as seek definition.

Found the install instruction as a scanned PDF for the front section 1255335:

http://www.240.se/litteratur/sb83-202.pdf

The website is utterly precious. The instruction makes no mention of the adhesive type, or PN, or manufacturer. I doubt GOOP RV resist or the various tubes of 3M adhesive in sealed ziplock baggies will work as well as they did not the first go around. I used the goop to re-adhere the piping.

Problem Statement:

The front replacement piping (PN 1255335, supersedes 681110 seal with the metal frame within), as named now, is NLA.

Also NLA is the rear piping (PN 3540456, supersedes 1255334, the earlier piping, and 681090 with the metal frame seal that came from the factory).

Factory seal is fine on the 1991.

The piping is a terrible quality when replacing the chewed up factory with metal strip therein on the 1992 240 GL. The flocking is not dense and the material structure felt cheap. Inside is a run of some not very dense small diameter light blue vinyl or neoprene or silicon to give compliance. Though the moonroof edge is smooth, the flocking does not allow an easy slide as it appears to have pull.

I was able to glue it again in using perhaps not ideal GOOP UV resist RV or Marine sealant. Yet UV exposure appears to have caused deterioration of the flocking matter on the top side, out pops the round blue strip, seal is lost, the midwestern precipitation unrelents, flow downhill, and drip on the front passenger seat. The four drains at the pan corner are clear yet as the poor thing parks outdoors to rot in the midwestern environment.

Links for Replacement Parts and Materials

Amazon and J C Whitney offer up something similar and of a similar appearing profile to the piping. Yet the images are terrible and dimension information is usually missing.

240 Moonroof Seal or Gasket Piping 200

Hi Kitty,

I have one car a 1991 with the sliding roof.
As far as I know it’s still in good shape. This car has had an easy life in regards to the slider as it was kept indoors a lot.
I have done nothing more than check the drains a couple of times since I have owned it.
So, I have no idea how it’s made.

Have you tried a place like Trimlock?
They manufacture seals of different types. It is in its design they push or clip on.
Like our trunk seals do.
Would something like that work in this case.
I was hoping that the engineer that did the trunk work may have had a hand in the roof slider?
But then, he could have been totally on the other end of things, like the trunk, many, many years before the slider.

If you have a sample or sizing these people can check their inventories!
They have a online catalog with dimensions are ready there that helps too!

They have a chat board to find for direct contact. Maybe some prior customers have matched it! They will gladly hook-you-up as a customer for more orders FROM them, if they exist?

What I like about these outfits is, if the other material has failed numerously, they should be able to offer better goods!
Life gets better through good “rethinking” engineering!

Phil

I have a few more comments to make to you about things but I will have to post them over on OPINIONS because it’s not related to this thread!
I know, over there, people can get blowed off, just as easily, as it’s only a rattle place!
I don’t know how long it will take me to put down some thoughts but it’s something that been working in my head.

Phil

Hiya Uncle Phil Machine Man,

Thank you.

I added the Trimlock web site as a bookmark in Comodo IceDragon, a Mozilla FireFox derivative.

I'll see what they have in some days.

I'd rather not buy the newer, terrible design of moon roof gasket seal as it began failing within 18-months to three years on the verdigris 1992 240 GL sedan. The 1991 240 sedan has the factory moon roof seal. The two 1970s 242 (1976, 1979) moonroof seal did not ever have a problem.

The Trimlock site shows seal provides with dimensions. The moonroof seal as the flocking or fuzziness to allow the sliding moon roof to slide. It would not work so well if it was made the same as our sedan and coupe trunk seals; sort of like the door seals. The surface is not covered in flocking. So maybe a dry silicone sealant?

I got a response from the facebook Volvo 240 fan club. A user acquired a section of soft black nylon fabric or strips of this fabric. He folded it and used it as the seal. I'd be concerned the nylon abrades the roof edges with repeated open / close action.

They all suggest the 3M trim adhesive. I use brake parts cleaner (forget chlorinated or not chlorinated) and when the cloth comes up clean, apply the 3M trim adhesive several thin coats with cure outgassing time in between as Eric Planetman says. And then, apply a coat or two to the contact surface of the seal with this blue silicon round blip inside the black fabric with the flocking. This effort was in 2009 or so in a garage. Gave it a day to cure between applications while I was treating the rust holes in the windshield pan pinch weld. Murky on the memory recall, a bit.

Anyhoo, the images of the user with teh black nylon fabric he uses as a moon roof seal.

Sort of smells in the 1992 240. Yet I reside in a flea-infested heck hole rife with aspergillus mold fungus. The humid oak tree jungle around the toilet Saint Louis is a microbial and vermin nightmare. Nice dry Wyoming beckons. High culture in St. Louis is the stupid hockey team winning the Stanley Cup. And I have no friends or family here. How I regret leaving Spokane and WA-state every moment. Knuckle dragging oaky MO-state, and this region, is the epitome of hatred toward the literate with critical notion wanting to be free and private.

So, the images of the black nylon fabric as seal.

Facebook allows you to link images that are "public".

I'll see your posts in the OPINIONS forum.

Appears the fascists will let me work at a low-paying technical writer job. Rather the medical device writer job versus the credit card company in St. Charles County. No not MasterCard.

hi kit g- long time no hear. hope all goes well. you have a list of ponderables in your message. thought that kind of piping was generally available, but perhaps not. my 92 245 is still rolling but not being used now. need a working ac car in fla summers so use the Saturn . arrival of cooler weather will put 245 back on tobacco road. don't let the clutch out too fast. other road hoggers don't expect bricks leave the light fast. your compadre oldduke

Love you Uncle Old Duke!

Good to hear from you also!

Hope all's aces over eights!

Hope the ripple is refreshing on your every warmer Florida days and nights!

No AC here in the Volvo 240s, all three. I'd been hoping to get around to it to restore in both sedans and than the 90 li'l red wagon. The 1991 sedan needs the fan motor swap. There exist more of less, R-12 compatible auto refrigerant 'blends'. Hope a set of seals and if it holds a vacuum with new drier, can fill with the so-called R-12 more or less compatible fridge stuff for some cooling. At least you get a breeze.

I remember you going on about water intrusion in your 1992 240 Wagon. At least you have no roof rack and no moonroof there like in both sedans. Never open then lest the sun is about set.

Keep the foot off the clutch pedal at all time yet press in and release gently. All three are different on the clutch action. May be time to drain and fill with new Amsoil SuperShift. Motor mounts have a touch of sag in them.

Nothing here in toilet town with the arches and the lower baseball cardinals. I've about had it with so-called St. Louis style pizza.

Sure Happy it's Thursday eve. About time to take recycling to the recycling center. Using the 1992 240 sedan with failing and many time glued moonroof seal or gasket. I was able to stop the leak using more GOOP UV resistant stuff.

Thank you,

Too Much Buttermilk, Boyeeeeee.

All 3 sunroof seals are still available, at least the last time I checked with my supplier.

I recently sold 2 of the 3 seals to another Brickboarder back in May.

I don't stock them, but I can get them.

240 Moonroof Seal or Gasket Piping 200

Hi Eric,

Thank you.

A third seal that encircles the moon roof hatch edge with flocking so all slides open and closed well? For 240? I'll check the diagrams on Volvo parts webstore? Though those diagrams are sort of terrible like more modern Volvo documentation. Modern being the late 1980s or so onward. Some people like that verbal or tribal knowledge, I guess! I don't in what I do for my job when I have a job, and I don't now.

My preference is to find roll of the stuff with similar profile. Something more durable that does not begin to fail in a few years or outdoor parking. The flocking material over the blue silicone (able to verify it is silicone) bead for the expensive front and rear section is not UV resistant and fails with moon roof use. I only use it on cool and cloudy days and usually at night in the depths of winter time.

Sir, thank you for your guidance! When I begin a new job, I may well take you up your offer.

Yet what do you use for an adhesive? the 3m trim adhesive fails. The GOOP RV resist adhesive is not the best either. Both seem to not like the moon roof action. The moon roof is perfectly aligned on the 1992 240 GL and and the works are well lubed.

Thank you. Happy Friday!

Iced Tea Boy with lots of lemon.

240 Moonroof Seal or Gasket Piping 200

Hello,

For some reason, Volvo USA has been eliminating part numbers from their available inventory even though the parts are still available from their warehouses in Sweden.

Up until recently, my local dealership was willing to assist in getting some of the number reinstated. However, the parts manager whom I've known for over 25 years since he was a fairly new parts counter person says that Volvo made it difficult and it was taking too much time so he won't do it anymore.

We have always used 3M 08008 black weatherstrip adhesive for all glue on body seals used on the Volvos we work on. The painted metal surfaces have to be scrupulously clean and you have to remove any remaining mold release on the seals. You also have to follow the instructions for the use of the glue and apply very thin coats. Large blobs don't cure properly and won't hold the seals properly.

For some of the door seals, I have to literally wash and scrub the seals to remove the mold release.
