volvo 245 1988 brake light/tail light assembly 200 1988

Hi all,

Finally got my 240 back on the road after a long saga that turned out to be the first thing I checked (MAF). I cleaned a broken MAF and moved on to a laundry list of other things.

Anyways, my rear left brake light is out and I am looking for some clarification. I have spent all day reading about switching the wires with the fog lights and Estonian aftermarkets etc.

I found a thread on here offering a definitive guide to tail lights; however, I don't see much clarity on there. https://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=1427308&show_all=1

Seems like I can get an OE from Tasca, but only for the left side (I think if I replace one assembly I am going to want to replace both. Another option is Sweedish auto parts (https://www.swedishautoparts.com/240/Volvo-240-lights-&-lenses.html), but I have no idea where the two tail lamp assemblies they are offering are from or how good (or bad) they are. Same thing goes for sweedish car parts (https://www.swedishcarparts.com/parts/925-1372442-c-volvo-wagon-245-240-complete-tail-light-assembly-right-side-passenger-side).

I am pretty much at a loss for what to do. I just got the car running pretty good, and I don't mind putting some money into getting the brake lights looking good (and legal), but I cannot seem to find out what I am paying for anywhere. Not only do I not have reviews, but I don't even have a manufacturer associated with most of these sites.

Please let me know any tips for what I should do. Open to all ideas. Should I but an aftermarket assembly and OE sockets? etc. Should I buy bulbs when I buy the assemblies?

While I was at it, I was figuring I would add the third brake light, which currently is just a wire. I found the lend and housing on tasca (https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/volvo-lens-and-housing-1369743/?c=bT0xJmc9ZWxlY3RyaWNhbCZzPWhpZ2gtbW91bnQtbGFtcHMmaT05NzQxNjU0JnI9MSZhPXZvbHZvJm89MjQ1Jnk9MTk4OCZ0PWRsJmU9Mi0zbC1sNC1nYXM%3D) and the bulb on sweedish auto parts. Anyone know where I can find the socket for that bulb?

    Hi,

Buy these, available from multiple sellers on EBay.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/VOLVO-240-245-WAGON-Tail-Light-Set-of-2-NEW-left-and-right-1372441-442/252636274881?hash=item3ad24ba0c1:g:TQkAAOSwKTVakNOP

This seller has sold 448 pairs and you can check out his customer's reviews.
The OP in the post you referenced was happy with his, and the pair in my wagon are fine after 12 years in an icy, salty environment.

EBay guarantees your satisfaction and will return your purchase price including return shipping if there's anything wrong with them, thus avoiding Dave's experience with an obstinate seller.

The above come without bulb holders so you can transfer your Volvo ones as Art suggests.

The Estonian maker has been around for quite a while but don't waste another day looking for a website that doesn't exist. What you see is what you get.

    regards,
    Peter

The only thing I would say is this--I had the worst experience with Swedish Car Parts. I ordered a steering rack boot for a 1975 245. The photo in the on-line catalog looked correct. What they sent was completely different and wrong. They sent another (at my cost) - also wrong. They requested dimensions which I sent - then sent me a third-also at my cost and with completely different dimensions. At that point I installed a somewhat sketchy used one and filed a complaint with my credit card company. - Dave

Don't know about yours, but my 87 wagon has a Dual Filament Bulb for the brakelight and the Running Light. When the brakes are hit it doubles in intensity.

Does it light up with the Parking Lights on-
No Key in Ingnition needed and then fail to fire the other filament only on the Left, when you push on the brake pedal?

""""While I was at it, I was figuring I would add the third brake light"""

3rd Brake light is stock in the 87 and I'm sure the 88 --- mounted in the middle of the rear hatch window.

Thank you for the reply. I will look into that stuff tomorrow.

As for the third brake light, it was removed for some reason by some previous owner, so there's just the wire there now.

The third brakelight wire in a wagon runs thru/under the left side Hinge.
You may find that the wire is broken there, so no power will reach that light when you find one to add.
The cnxn is located under the liner. Use the Search function on BrickBoard for fixes other than removing the hinge. ie "broken tailgate wires 240 wagon".

This place is a good one to bookmark for Parts. New and Used. Email or call them during business hours. They may have a used 3rd brakelight for a wagon. They do not really have an extensive online listing/ordering sales page setup...it's by Email or Phone. They are in Atlanta, know their stuff and are friendly
