240 No start problem, Actually intermittent. 200 1993

1993 240 wagon, 230,000 miles. New catalytic converter, just passed smog in California last week. But today after running fine and parked, no start. Good battery and tight cables. 3/4 tank of fuel, lights and warnings light up with key on, fuel pump is heard to click under seat, but no start. After moving shifter around and using shift release button it started.

Is this a solenoid issue for starter? Or an ignition relay or switch issue? I just spent $600 for a failed smog test, another failed smog test and a catalytic converter. I will do tests myself to diagnose this first. Please lay out the tests and methods for me. Thanks, always.

    Might seem irrelevant, but if wiggling the shifter allows the engine to crank, the usual problem is the bushings* are destroyed and missing in the shifter linkage and/or the contacts on the pizza-slice neutral safety switch (#29) are worn and dirty.

      Hi Art, Hope to find you doing well.

      So are you saying that if those two small bushings are worn
      or missing that they don't allow the linkage to line up correctly
      and engage the neutral safety switch? I've never had this issue
      but knowledge is key here.

        I'll chime in to concur with Art; if you've the time and ability, renewing those bushings is a worthwhile endeavor. The satisfaction of rowing a tight, dare I say precise, shifter after living with a loose one make the time spent on ones back under the car worth it.

        The downside is that while you're under there you might notice some other things that need fettling. So goes the never-ending battle of Volvo 240 maintenance.

          I have been having this problem in my 92. Replaced the switch tightened everything and still have the problem.
          There are no bushings on my linkage but I have them somewhere I know after the hurricane decides what it is going to do I will replace them.

        Hi Joseph,

        Never had this issue? I can think of a couple reasons why, none having anything to do with the arid environment. One, perhaps you prefer your manual shift Volvos. Two, the slop that results when the bushings disintegrate isn't sudden, but gradual, making it easy to compensate unconsciously. Like the way shocks and strut cartridges wear.

        The danger of neglecting the bushing replacements (living with the slop) is the extra stress it places on the swivel joint in the linkage. The replacement bushings are far easier to find than the link rod. And the tight, positive "new" feeling you get after replacing the bushings makes you wonder how you put up with the slop.
