J-Type M41 Speedo Pinion gear drive housing identification 1800

Fellow Brickboarders:

I need your advice. I recently bought a rebuilt J-type M41 tranny. When I was getting the parts together to complete the swap with the M40 I have on my 122s (I am posting this under 1800 since I am assuming that was where the late-type M41 may have come from), I was stumped when I saw the speedo drive. I took it out for better view. See pictures:

As you can see, the housing that holds the pinion gear has flat surface...no threads for the speedometer cable to be screwed on.

I showed that picture to the person who sold me the M41. He thought it was odd. While he is figuring that out, I thought perhaps one of you from the Brickboard would have an answer.

Many thanks in advance for your help/advice!

Volvo/Laycock used at least 2 different housing assemblies to retain the speedometer drive gear.

Curiously, I just sold the part you need to another Brickboarder last week and I think it was the last 1 I had.

FYI, there were 2 versions of the part you need. 1 version has the retaining bracket welded to it and the other doesn't and is a separate part so get both pieces if you don't have that bracket.

The latest version of the entire assembly is still available from Volvo.

If you do source a used 1, make sure it came from a Volvo as the British version has a different thread pitch for the speedometer cable.

Hi Eric Planetman:

Many thanks for your reply. I was able to visually understand the parts you were talking about after viewing the exploded diagram of the speedo housing from the link Ron Kwas provided (see my response to him which included a snapshot of that diagram).

You said that I could get them from Volvo. You mean from the dealer? I tried checking other suppliers I had been purchasing parts from, but none had the parts i need (the bracket and the threaded piece, part #103 and 104). Could you kindly help me get the info I need to get the parts from Volvo as it seems that the Volvo sites I went to only sell parts for newer cars.

As for used parts, I also tried checking eBay and such, but no luck. And there’s no guarantee if they are genuinely from Volvo for fitment accuracy.

Thanks,

-DS

What's available from Volvo is the updated housing and they cost $90.61.

The part you need for the older set up is NLA from Volvo and most suppliers.

I actually prefer the set up you have as the inner seal is a lot easier to change. The updated version requires you press the housing apart to replace the inner seal.

Thanks, Eric.

“NLA” is a dreaded acronym, but fortunately, I just heard from the guy who sold me the M41, and he will be sending me the complete speedo drive assembly to swap what I currently have. So all should be good, whew.

Thanks to all who responded...I’ve learned so much from you guys.

DBS;

That style of Speedocable must be the type held in place by a bracket which is secured by a single bolt going into that adjacent hole and strattles the end termination...I haven't looked but expect the bracket would be shown on the exploded assembly diagrams on the GCP.se site. If you have a Speedocable with overnut intended for the D type OD, I don't know off hand if or how this will play with this different setup...you may need to change your Speedocable to the later type...making up the bracket once you have the cable in hand and trial fit it, should be straight-forward...or you could ask around for one off a parts OD...please post pix of your solution...!

Cheers

Edit: ...on GCP.se's site for 1800 B20: https://www.gcp.se/en/catalogues/model/p1800-en/
...see page 219, Items 103-105 cover securing Speedocable.

Thanks, Ron! The link you provided really helped me visually understand what is missing from the speedo drive assembly.

Here is a snapshot of the diagram from the link:

So, it looks like I will need these parts #103 and #104 to complete the assembly with the housing I have (Part #98). BUT where would I be able to get these parts #103-104?!

If it is not possible, then I can either 1) replace this housing with one having built in threads OR 2) somehow machine these parts.

For the option #2 I would need to get a new speedo cable first so that I can measure the female threads of the cable going to the tranny.

Option #1 may be easier if geting parts #103-104 is not possible. Thoughts?

Thanks again,

-DS
