OEM Roof Rack Placement on 240 wagons

Hi all,

Every wagon I run into online or in the real world, has the OEM rack towards the tail of the wagon. Mine seems to have it towards the front. I like it this way better, though I'm curious about this positioning.

Was placement customized? I read they were installed in the US. Anyone know more?

Thanks!

L

Does your car have a sunroof?

If one travels with the wagon loaded, a front mount makes more sense - to better balance the car.

No sunroof, it's a 1990 Volvo 240 DL wagon in Polar White 189. It's got the 5th fold down seat.

It's my experience working in imported car dealerships that many accessory items were installed at the port or dealership. The position location may have been a special request by the original purchaser. There's nothing to stop locating the rack in an unconventional spot but the headliner ribs. The attaching points are accomplished by drilling holes in the roof and inserting "well nuts". -- Dave

Thanks Dave,

That's interesting. I wonder about the original owner's input on this. I do like the look of it more myself. It lends the wagon a sportier look, especially with the rear load bearing springs angling the car up a tiny bit in the rear.
