I have a 1988 245 with 300k and a 1980 242 with 135k casting #16322. I'm going to take an engine repair class in a couple semesters. The instructor asked me to ask the bulletin board whether I can take a junkyard B230F, rebuild it in class, then install in my 1980 which has a B21F engine? (B230F uses LH 2.2, B21F CIS fuel injection FWIW).
Either way, what is the highest mileage B230F engine that I should use to rebuild?
Thanks

everything that bolts to the block on a b21 is different than a b230, except the trans and dist. when volvo discontinued the rebuilt b21/b23, there was a small book of instructions for using a b230 in an early vehicle, along with a list of parts needed, some of which were only for that job and never used in production.

Very interesting information, Chuck. When using a b230 retrofit in a dealership environment, was it expected the customer would not want to pay for accessories such as AC, power steering pump and hoses, alternator, etc. and I don't even know if details would be the same to match up the intake and exhaust manifolds? Bet that little book has trivia value on ebay.

we never did a transplant, so i don't know all the pitfalls. there was 1 motor and 3 or 4 kits for whatever installation. i would just pull it all and put a b230, alt, ps, etc from that year and stuff it into the old car. much easier.

In a word, or a few words DON'T DO IT...the part about transplanting a B230 into that 1980 with 132K in it.
DON'T DO IT.
rebuild a B230 and put it in that 1988 300K 245.
Your instructor seems not to know about the Worth of each of the Volvo's that you own.
Perhaps you shud pick up a beater Ford, Chevy, or Dodge and use that in the Class.

I tried to put my 1982 GLT on Bring a Trailer and they rejected the car. Not up to their standards apparently [I did put a $10 000 reserve on it I have to admit].
It is a 1982 GLT. I had a good paint job put on it a year ago and I have owned it for over 25 years. It has the B23E engine, manual transmission, burgundy colour. I did have rust taken out over the years from the usual spots around the wheel wells and in the trunk tire wells. Upholstery is 'funky' with some breaks in the leather and faded floor carpet. Nothing really broken however.
You seem to have a clear idea on Volvo worth. Any thoughts?

PS
In addition, apparently nor do you know the difference in the Worth of these Volvos, to even entertain the idea.
California cars with no Rust a 242 witha B21 clocking 132k... is that the correct picture? VS an 88 245 Auto with 300+K.

Right to both. I have no idea what a 1980 242 is worth; it's in storage in my garage on jacks and stored per the FAQs suggestion.
In fact, I almost got rid of it because I can't find any in junkyards for parts and hardly see any for sale on craigslist. It's mostly been in storage (drove maybe 200 miles), but passed smog 5 years ago, then I decided to keep it in storage. What might it be worth?
I'd rather learn on a B230F and have it in the garage, rather learn on another car because if my 1988 ever gets totaled and I find a deal on Volvo with a blown engine, I could pick it up for a song.
As a learning experience, is the only problem reducing the resale value of the 1980, or is there an incompability between the B230F and B21Fs?

Wait wait wait wait. so in about 2 months you will have in 'storage' a 1980 242 with...what was that on the clock??
and you look on CraigsList and search Junkyards to figure it's worth.
R U a Cali NO RUST HERE guy?.... The Vintage Volvo Unappreciation Police VVUP, who have been alerted by this BB, will be coming to confiscate it. For The Greater Good.
Yeh, so my stored Amazon, can't find any for sale on Craigslist...none in the Junkyards for parts. Ergo Worthless.
WOW
TOOOO HARSH?????

About 2002, bought the 1980 242 DL with M46 in question with 135k miles as a back-up car. Title is clear and in my name.
Odometer works. No evidence of odometer tampering based upon car's condition and service records from prior owner.
Drove about 2 months, about 300 miles.
Read FAQs, then put in garage in storage, non-operational status with DMV and droe another car (not the subject of this post).
Had accident that other car in 2014. Decided to drive the 1980; smogged it and passed.
However, bought another car instead and put the 1980 back in storage. Not driven since due to having other car to drive.
No rust.
Short of getting an appraisal, how do I figure out its worth?
