Vent Window Seals? 1800 1970

Hi Mr. Bucher,

Some article and links for you. I've not performed such service on vent-window equipped RWD Volvo.

Ron Kwas and Eric Planetman are two or many that know how to as well as where to get quality replacement seals. They and other may have yet to reply to your original post query.

Anyhoo, here goes:

ForumRWD VolvosAmazon P120, P130 & P220 (1956-1970)

I'm guessing how the seal secures in the brightwork and frame on p1800 vent window is the same as Amazon. The brickboard links here are abou a decade old, and referenced links to images are NLA as those sites are closed.

Not specific to p1800, this page includes all Volvo 'green' service manuals for each 164 year in English. 164 and 140 had vent windows up to 74 or 75. May be useful for you.

1. Buy the parts, preferably from me.
2. Remove trim plate on the front of the door
3. Remove window winder handle
4. Carefully remove upper and lower door panels
5. Remove 2 rear facing bolts at bottom of vent window frame
6. Remove screws near the top of the door
7. Remove vent window assembly from door, you may have to spread the opening
8. Remove retaining/tension clip below window
9. Push window down to disengage pivot stud and remove window from frame
10. Remove old seal
11. Install new seal, use silicone spray lubricant,
12. Verify the drain holes in the bottom of the seal are open
13. Put it back together

If present, make sure the special clip on the back of the upper door panel engages the metal upper brace for the lower door panel. When properly installed the clip helps hold the bottom of the upper door panel in place.

Also make sure the large flap at the bottom of the vent window seal doesn't get pinched under the upper door panel. It's okay for it to be partially wedged behind the panel as it's normal to have to gently pull it up and over the top of the door panel where it is supposed to be.

FYI, this is an excellent time to replace the outer window scrapers and the window guide channels and most importantly, clear the drain holes in the bottom of the door while you have the vent window assembly removed.

If it's been a long time since anyone has been inside the door, I usually find a layer of caked up dirt in the crease inside at the bottom of the door. A vacuum cleaner won't remove it and it is necessary to break it up with a tool so it can be removed with a vacuum cleaner. Besides blocking the door drains, this caked up dirt can at like a sponge holding moisture to the back of the door skin and promoting rust from within.

Many thanks. I've replaced a window regulator, so I should be able to handle this. Already have the seals and felt material to line the window channels. If I run into anything else that needs to be replaced, I'll get in touch.

Bottom seam inside door - clean out/ rust killer/ anti rust primer/ top coat/ wax spray. Use a brush for the paint to get a decent coating thickness. Granny sucking eggs, probably, you know the drill.
