door courtesy light switch trick? 200 1982

This is not a big deal but I have been experiencing intermittent action from the driver's side door courtesy light switch. This is on a GLT so there are only two doors on the car.

It probably just needs a cleanup and a bit of sanding but I am unable to pull it through the hole once I have removed the Phillips screw.

Is there some other access point for this switch or do I just have to get violent and yank it through. Kind of worried I will lose the connecting wire down inside the fender if I do that.

What I've experienced is you pull the switch loose and get it out only far enough to see the spade connectors before the wires are taut. Getting to the other side of the wiring in the A-pillar means taking down the fuse panel, so, instead of getting into all that work, I am as non-violent as I can be with the wires, relieving the strain with long-nosed pliers and then with an alligator clip after disconnecting them. There is only one wire at the passenger side, but two at the driver's side in the 242.

This one in the red car is the older type, mostly metal, which I find in my '79.

These plastic ones are the kind I found in my 83-93 cars.

      had to dismantle 200 1982

      Hi Art,

I could not get the second wire through the hole at all so I had to get the fuse panel out and get to the wire that way.

One does wonder why nobody could think to add about an inch in length to the wire.

Nevertheless it turned what should have been a half hour job into an all day effort. I put in an extension wire so that in future the switch can be serviced from the outside.

Seems to be working but I will give it a day or two to be sure.

      Bob

      Hello Art,

I think mine is the first one you show, i.e., the metal one, but I will get back to you once I have it out of the car.

Thanks for the excellent pictures. Much appreciated

      Bob
