Fuel hose choice 120-130

I was happy when my beloved Duett started without complaint after a nearly 2 and one half year hiatus. Still on jack stands but ran fine, throttled up smoothly. I shut her down after 3-4 minutes or so; some work left to be done.

When I got out of the car to look things over I saw fuel leaking from (literally!) everywhere. Every end of every piece of rubber hose and the carburetor gaskets.

My twin SUs are back with Joe Curto now, getting a going over.

Needless to say, I'll replace all of the rubber hoses and fuel filter.

What is the best brand / correct size of hose? Given that I won't be needing miles of hose, money really isn't an object. I'd like the most fuel / alcohol resistant stuff there is. I looked on the ipd and FCP Euro sites and found surprisingly little useful information.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

A bit late to the party; but, my 2 cents.

I have a 142 E so it is fuel injected and running at moderately high pressure (36 psi - no longer D jet). After some poor results with over the counter fuel injection hose, I switched to Parker Abrasion King Push On hose. Its slightly more than twice the price of the over the counter hose; but, has been very durable and does not suffer from distortion under the clamps. Compared to over the counter hose it is fairly thick walled and stiff and it will not do short radius bends because of that stiffness. You won't find it at typical large auto parts suppliers. You will likely have to go to a hose specialist or hydraulics specialist - or check Parker Hannifin's web site to see if they list vendors.

Planetman is 100% correct about the hose clamps - specifically no garden hose clamps. ABA brand clamps are nice; but, a bit expensive and can be hard to find. I found some Spanish made stainless banded clamps at a hydraulic supplier - very spiffy and shiny if you want some dress up factor. Also kind of expensive. Dorman makes some banded fuel injection clamps that are readily available, really inexpensive and will not chew up your hoses.

When I started working on old Volvos back in the late 1970's I swore by Gates fuel hose.

But about 15 years ago we started seeing very premature cracking in the outer casing of the Gates fuel hose we had recently installed on customers cars. And in some cases the cracks were so deep you could see the inner core. The hoses weren't leaking at that point, but we were worried they would so we had to get recent customers to come back in for inspection and replacement.

So we switched to Goodyear fuel hose and we've been very happy with the performance.

But about 3 years ago Goodyear stopped selling all types of bulk hose including fuel hose and it was replaced by Continental and so far we've been happy with all of the Continental brand bulk hose we've been selling.

If you will need 3' of 3/16" fuel hose and 1' of 1/4" fuel hose.

I strongly suggest using hose clamps that don't damage the hose when tightened. Although much cheaper, "Ideal" style hose clamps damage the outer casing when the rubber is squeezed through the slots in the band. We use ABA hose clamps that have a smooth inner ring and are tightened with a machine screw.

We also install an inline fuel filter between the fuel pump and the the front carburetor.

Be sure to pay attention to the SAE rating --- todays fuels have smaller molecules than the fuel of old. Without the proper permeability rating, you can find yourself posting "I just replaced all my fuel hose and now my garage smells like gasoline." The small molecules can pass right through without a liquid leak.

Eric - I've experienced the cracked hose as well - it was SAE 30R7 rated for low pressure efi use back in 2002 or so. Cracking showed up in 6-7 years. I spend a bit more these days and just use the current SAE rated hose for high pressure/high temp efi applications -- even for lower pressure applications. No smell. No cracking for rest of my life (I'm old). I don't attribute the cracking to a particular brand, but rather to the hose's rating.

SAE30R10 for submersible (in the fuel tank)
SAE30R14 for everything else.

You won't need it for pressure, but for permeability and standing up to alcohol, get efi hose rated for SAE 30R14 use. Less expensive for lower pressure SAE 30R7 or SAE 30R8. Gates, Goodyear - other reputable manufacturers.
