240 wiring harness fire anyone? 200 1990

It just takes one broken bolt...... or smoke coming out from under the hood of a non running car, to turn a 4 hour job into a 3 day job.
I was installing remote door locks in my 240, when I smelled something burning. I looked under the hood and smoke was coming out of the wiring harness from the hot junction next to the battery that goes over the wheel well and back to the firewall. !!! I disconnected the battery and after following the wires, it appears that indeed, the short may be behind the dash. The wire with the short appears to be #8 or possibly #6. Has anyone had any experience with such a short, and why would you need that much amperage inside the car? Why, why, was it not fused? Also, I thought all the high amp items used relays.
The previous owner did a lot of dubious shade tree work on the car, and glaringly neglected some items; He rigged a foot switch for the bright dim lights, and had removed both locking relays. I found them in the glove compartment. when I plugged them in, the locks worked fine. I have a 90 model car I am parting out, so I have a harness, but am not looking forward to removing the dash of the "black beauty".

"Why, why, was it not fused?"

I always wondered if that question was finally put to Volvo in a manner (legal) which got them listening. Very late in the game. Last few 93's produced.

Nice improvement.
I was on a bumpy private gravel road in a 93 240, without the battery secured, and suddenly saw warning dash lights flicker. The next time I applied the brakes, I had none. The bouncing battery had touched the ABS lines and there was no fluid in the front brakes any more.
Secure your battery.
Beware those close proximity ABS lines, and if you know Volvo did not fuse it, fuse it yourself.

"without the battery secured"

You are a moving Hazzard to every other driver who shares the road with you.

like that guy who had an "unexplained leak, that caused the brake pedal to go to the floor" but still kept driving it. Because it only happened 'occasionaly'

What if you get caught in some kind of Multi vehicle crash, and your "unsecured" battery SPARKS a sets fire to the leaking gas that's all over place.

GOOD F*(in' GRIEF

Wow. An Epiphany! I am a menace to society and did not realize it.
Thank you.
