I just finished up a major service on this car. When I ordered the parts I included a seal and O rings for the distributor. When I did the last oil change I noticed oil on the back of the engine running down from the distributor. As can be seen in the photo there was a lot of oil in the cap.
I have changed the seal on these 7/940 distributors several times before. Sometimes the pins that need to come out to remove the shaft are easier than others. This one was difficult.
I open up the vise enough to allow the pin to move down between jaws as it is driven out. I used the wrong pin punch initially. It was too small and I bent it. The correct one measured .15" (5/32").
I needed a helper to hold the distributor so I could direct my attention to getting the pin out. It finally moved. I found in the past that the fiber washers that are sandwiched between the metal ones are thin and rather fragile. Removing them from the shaft should be attempted only after removing the buildup.
Greasing the seal and the shaft prior to reassembly insures not damaging the new seal. I put the pin in the freezer before driving it back into place. That and a bit of grease seemed to help.
