Sunroof crank internals? 200 1980

The sunroof crank in the wife's 19080 244 has long been an irritation. It always seems to work its way loose and requires re-tightening. Usually this is just an irritation but today it has turned into a real PIA. When removing the crank arm and gear mechanism, the gear mechanism just blew apart into multiple pieces and somewhere, somehow, I think I have lost some small bit(s).

The casting on the gear mechanism appears to be marked GOLDE 523-413-611 (or is that G11?). Aside from the casting, I have a washer with a dawg on the outside edge, a "toothed" disk with some form of stop on one side, and the gear itself.

When I try to put things together with only these, the thing does not seem to wind to a point where it stops and it used to before this explosion of bits today. So I figure I have lost something. But I have no idea what it is or looks like.

Can anyone who has been inside of these tell me what should be there? There are teeth in the casting, teeth on the disk that fits inside. But I see nothing to show a reason for these to be there. So maybe that is what is missing. Details of the parts and how to properly assemble are appreciated.

And if someone can suggest a way to keep this thing in place, the mounting screws not loosening up all the time (short of epoxy since I may have some legitimate need to remove it at some point) I would appreciate that too. I have tried blue locktite and that hasn't helped at all.

Thanks

The gearbox is held together with just a couple of spots being peened over and having one "explode" is not uncommon. I just sold one like that. Not that I understand how it works but there is a stop to the mechanism in each direction. You may have to just keep re-orienting the pieces till it works. I think from your description you have all the parts you need.
As far as I know it's the same in VW's and I think BMW's too if need to replace yours. -- Dave

Thanks for the response and encouragement. A buddy sent me a unit pulled out of a junker that arrived today. Sadly it is not the right unit. No doubt from a later model as there is a locking button actuated by the crank arm somehow. Anyway, it will not fit the opening in the car and my crank won't work with it. Too bad, so sad.

I tried to have a go with the bits I have since I have looked about a hundred times in the car for small stuff but found nothing but pebbles and old pieces of corn chips (at least I think that is what those were). Nothing I tried would work.

I agree that there is supposed to be a stop in each direction. On the toothed disk I can see the nub that performs this job and in the casting I see the track the nub travels in and the stopping points.

There has to be some reason for the teeth on that disk and those cut into the casting. No one would go to the expense and effort unless that we there case. But I see nothing that engages either side: disk or casting.

The wife is very upset but I am looking at the bright side - at least it is in the fully closed position. Here in the PNW having an open sunroof can be a real problem most of the time.

      Cheers

Did you get one with a plastic handle?

I'm pretty sure I have all the pieces from an '83 with the chrome handle looking like the one philski o'flood pictured in your post on TB. I'll check and get some pics if you're still without solution. Let us know.

Here are some photos of the unit I need to replace.

          drive dot google dot com/drive/folder/1GBliAORPL7hHhwEK4h1oB5Sww62gMhQ8?usp=sharing

          Using my caliper:

          The thickness is about 9.4mm,

The longest dimension (with flange) is about 64.4mm,

The longest dimension (without flange) is about 60.5mm,

The shortest dimension (with flange) is about 41.9mm,

The shortest dimension (without flange) is about 37.7mm,

The diameter of the center hole is about 15mm,

The holes for the mounting screws are about 14mm center-center,

The overall length of the spindle with gear is about 27.3mm.

Why do they have to make this so hard?

Thanks for your time, effort, and help. I continue to check around at EBay and some other possible sources. No luck so far.

          Thanks

My junk bag of pieces measure like yours except for the hole centers. They are not 14mm but 40mm on center. Since all else matches, this is either a typo or I'm looking at the wrong holes. :)

Unfortunately, the pieces I have show obvious attempts at MacGyvering, and the pot metal "nuts" for the mounting screws have serious stress cracks. You're welcome to the bag of junk as I have no anticipated use for it. Just need your address. You can send me a message to benstein at cleanflametrap dot com. That's benstein, not bernstein.

Thanks Art. A buddy sent me a unit that is a newer variant than I can use. It will not fit. It uses a different crank as well. I think the crank it needs have a push button lock mechanism. Cool but no joy for the wife. At TB it was suggested that the t-nuts and screws used to fix the unit in place could be worn out and this causes it coming loose. Perhaps this contributed to the explosion? So I am looking for those too. Cheers

I cannot help you about the crank - how about one of the Volvo salvage yards?

Ask the Boarders for a new crank - If you can find the right person, I am sure there are damaged 200s out there.

As for the screws - I would install the screws and put a wide stripe of epoxy over the screw - you could grind it off if necessary.
