544 Tachometer question 444-544

Hi all,

At some point I'm planning on adding a vintage tach to my PV544.

I was hoping something that at least looks period - VDO, maybe Smiths.

I was thinking of using an electronic Tach, 12v, 4cylinder, and I still have the original/old VJU Bosch Distributor.

Am I missing anything key (like oh, you can't use an electronic tach, or something like that?).

I ask as some of these older tachs are $$$ and I don't want to buy anything that won't work..

Thanks,
Chris

    544 Tachometer question 444-544

I checked my instruments stash -- I have one top of dash mounted tach in a plastic bullet shaped housing with a broken lower section and 2 in-dash type negative ground tachs - 1 Smiths, 1 Jaeger (both loose). Contact me at fastforwardphoto(AT)yahoo(DOT)com if interested. -- Dave

    544 Tachometer question 444-544

    SG;

I don't see any reason any Tach suitable for 12V won't work...even the "current sensing" input Smiths style like on the 1800 could be made to work.

    Cheers

      544 Tachometer question 444-544

thanks for the replies - I don't know much about doing this so want to make it as simple and 'plug and play' as possible - so negative ground, 12v, 4cyl, so the only work would be mounting it, giving it power, and hooking up to the distributor.

Honestly, the only real use for me at least would be rpm at highway speeds; everything less is ears...

I was eyeballing something like this (link eBay):

      https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Smilths-Tachometer-7000-RPM-4-Cylinder-Negative-Earth/333294468782?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D225086%26meid%3D75d17d4e962248cdacc2bb4e0c2954d2%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26mehot%3Dnone%26sd%3D333294468782%26itm%3D333294468782%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2380057%26brand%3DSmiths&_trksid=p2380057.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3A43639c14-d748-11ea-97d0-74dbd1801212%7Cparentrq%3Abfd9e73a1730ad4c362994d3fffff3e4%7Ciid%3A1

    544 Tachometer question 444-544

I think I can answer your question but waited to see of anyone more technically oriented would answer first. I don't think you'll have any trouble finding a working tach for the 544. Just about any electrically operated tach will work with your distributor. About the only one wired differently than usual that I know of is the one in the 1800 series before the E and ES. Tachs that I'm aware of would have 3 wires (maybe a 4th for lamp) that would consist of one plus (+), one ground (-), and one from the negative side of the coil which is the exposed coil connection on your 544 and 122 models. Some early aftermarket tachs may a bit more involved. One of my first cars (in 1965) was a 1959 Mercedes 190 sedan. I was given a Sun tach (the kind you'd put on the steering column) that had a largish sending unit box to mount. It was meant for a V8 and a neighbor with the knowledge soldered in a resistor or two in the appropriate spots to make it read correctly for my 4 cyl. I believe the top-of-the-dash tachs used for the 123GT would have 4 wires as I described earlier. I may even have the makings of one if you're interested. - Dave

      544 Tachometer question 444-544

Thanks so much. So 3/4 wires is what I'm after. I was asking as some of the oldtimer tach backs look straight forward and others are a bit more complex.

Prom what I've seem late 60s Smiths MGB gauges seem to be decent value.

I'd be interested in what you are building, so keep me in the loop with that.

The SunPro Supertach II is small and neat and also has a bit of retro about it. Still current I think. I bought one off a stall at an autojumble (UK) for £15, unused but no box.

          544 Tachometer question 444-544

thanks for the tip - I'm hoping to buy everything early-mid 60s (original or copy) and super-period looking, even if it costs more or takes longer. I don't do that with every car, but that's my goal with this one...

The extra driving/fog lamps I installed were a real challenge, but in the end found some period Marchal copies which fit the bill...
