240 Used Engine Replacement 200

My 240 threw a piston rod through the block, and am considering a replacement used engine. Has anyone ever used SWengines? Reviews seem real, reputable, with 5yr 50K warranty on the engine, shipping included anywhere in 48 states for ~925$.
Any thoughts? Not sure I will find a used engine that has a warranty, or have any confidence of being worth reinstalling.

My son wants to keep the 90 240....was daily driver in good condition until engine failed about a year ago.

    As someone who has 240 engines comming out of his wazoo(far north from you all) this thread saddens me.In my rust belt world good 240 engines are so plentifull that no one would consider machine shop work.

      I have a 46,000 mile engine after rebuild at a Milwaukee Volvo dealer some years ago. M47 trans. went bad and rust was a factor to junk the Volvo 245.
      It's been sitting on a engine stand in the garage for years.
      Make a reasonable offer....I'm in northern Wisconsin.

    If you have a local junk yard you should be able to pull a complete engine for about $350.

      Hi Dave,
      You deserve a hello!

      Yep, you can even have it pulled for for about $50 while you can wait in some yards.
      They are just as liable to put that car back on rack or put it into a crusher shortly thereafter because the drive train is gone.
      I was told here in California, that during the “cash for clunkers” deals, they were doing almost 10,000 cars a day into scrap!
      That was until scrap material prices plummeted!
      Now they do the squeeze thing more slowly! Maybe 9,000. (:-)

      I wouldn’t doubt SWengine will do the same thing by getting your order a part.
      Probably hooking up on many junkyards through interconnected network sites!
      What you’re liable to get is an engine that’s pressure washed and shrink wrapped like they say (?) stored indoors on a rack. The BBB gives them an “ F” on complainers. Is that just in their state?

      You got to consider the laws of each state and the nomenclature on the web site, for me, leaves ambiguous loop holes for negotiations of contracts.
      As long as they ship you “something” that was turned in being of recyclable condition, you’ll own it.
      What does, performance testing “to the hilt” really mean?
      So many different fuel management configurations to go back 25 years to a 240 to 100% and engine. Local yards go 30 days and any dismantlers are a little better, but I don’t know details.
      I have surveys their stock and they usually have better goods over the self pull yards for their dollars.
      So I’m not knocking them but going National is a bit of a gamble IMHO.

      There are “Official dismantlers” do work to resell the best of the worst cars going through the insurances contacts, of which, offer “Reclaim or stealing services” called “Total It” to them only!
      I believe it’s a brotherhood business or industry. When you will consider this, as what else can you do with “millions“ being made and I don’t mean just the car units!
      I have one “salvaged title car” I got from its one owner, for $700 insurance price, with a dented rear door.
      I got a complete PNP door for $40 with matching paint. Done, for 20 years now!

      These dismantlers work all kinds of angles to refresh the road with road worthy automobiles all across the country.
      In California the DMV are having “fits” with some car chop shops and it’s gotten so bad!
      Today, If you get a used car with parts from other cars, they want to see receipts, within the Bill of Sale paperwork, for all of them to get a new salvaged title.
      I had a neighbors son go through the hassle for almost six months to get his tags, of which, he had to pay for up front despite if it got cleared or not!
      Temporary papers were replaced in the windshield over and over! He was Always looking to get pulled over at any time!
      The person or friends of that shop, that sold the car to him, had totally disappeared.
      To top this off shortly after getting the plates, on his Nissan Altima, a plastic part of the cooling system broke and that blew up the engine!
      Here I’m thinking a radiator, since the front end was redone in that shop, but apparently, there’s more plastic everywhere on the engine!

      Scott Kilmer has a video about how the Germans are now making upper valve train that holds the cams in place made out of plastic!
      If you know Scott, you can figure out what he thinks of it very quickly!
      Imagine all those springs pushing on plastic that is repetitively heated by that aluminum head!
      Hey, if get out of warranty they can sell more plastic or scrap the whole car, over here in our backyard.

      Another neighbor has a 2008 Ford pickup that uses a plastic intake manifold that keeps coolant in its place somehow? A $1200 repair plus $450 for the part!
      He is too old to want a new truck so he sprung for it.
      Oh by the way, the rear window fell out and busted just sitting in his driveway. He said every once and awhile he would hear a small pop!
      Also it has blown loose Two separate spark plugs since he got it new. It’s Holding at 132 K. He is 75 and in bad health!

      I just have to shrug my shoulders while watching the 240’s surpassing them all over the years.
      I have the cost of one mid priced car of today, in my Six, even though they never passed them so very fast like, their still passing!
      Not so obsolete, even yet!
      My cars owe me nothing as I have gotten my paybacks! They are far from being “Scott’s money-pits,” especially, if you can turn a wrench for yourself!

      I really appreciate their overall designed in thoughts and service.
      I use to almost cry in the JY’s but there’s not so many now, its just sad eyes looking!

    i'd just look for another used engine. the 89 up b230s are pretty sturdy and i would have no qualms about doing that. in my zip code, car-parts.com has 1 listed for 450 with 112,000 miles on it. you might get cheaper if you can find 1 someone pulled the head off of.

      I would vote for a PnP engine also. I've had a very good experience with a PnP AW70. My thinking was not many cars get in accidents because of transmission failure. Its now been 20 years and I really love having an OD.

    Not heard of them. Have notion as to rebuilt value anymore. I'll guess a long block with cylinder head. May have been SouthWest Engine in Tulsa.

      Hi there Kit!

      Yep, it seems to be like the Car Shield car repair insurance company being pushed so hard on TV.
      Don’t know why anyone would want to pay on a never ending repair that might happen and find out it’s not covered or they can use parts from like this SW engine.
      At the bottom of Car Shield advertisements it state that their policies are not sold in California.
      Bet there is a reason Alone with just the emissions clearances!
      They also have a “F” rating with BBB. Just like with the BBB you found on SW!

      I looked up some fine print on American insurance in Texas that write policies with a license under the state of Florida.
      There is also a reference to a place in Colorado probably being the call center?

      Isn’t it amazing that both the companies have really lose wording on what is covered or being sold.
      I looked over what you posted and all is very vague.
      The engine is checked for “performance to the hilt!” Who’s?
      The FAQ’s are too short and so simplistic!

      I’d say I’m not interested in whatever these yo- ho’s are selling!

        Hiya Uncle Phil Machine Man!

        I have to agree. I have no personal experience with an engine rebuilding service, though.

        Under the tutelage of a local StL import auto repair shop in Bridgeton MO that remains open to this day, I co-rebuilt a B21F in a 1979 245 DL (with M46) in like 1987. No rod was thrown, yet a engine oil loss failure. Pop in some new babbit bearings, hone the cylinder walls. The #3 rod big end bearing showed the worst of it. The terrible machinist on St. Charles Rock Road shaved the rod big end cap and used honing tool to make the resized #3 rod big end, uh, 'round' with several visits to this honing tool.

        I questioned the method and balance in the other three rods, the crankshaft counter weight balance. The crank rod journals were turned.

        By the time I got to CA-state in later 1987, #3 rod was clattering. No facility to crank the long block much less pull it and put it on a stand. A real machine shop would have at the. So in 1988 or so I left parked at a junkyard.

        An in-person rebuild to get the 1979 245 DL (M46) for cheap was a but. The owner of that shop in Bridgeton MO griped how he lost money on the deal the next time I returned to the shop in the late, late 1980s or early 1990s in slovenly region of America: St. Louis.

        Else, I've helped others, and piecemeal enlisted a trusted auto machine shop service. What few experiences I had were on 1960s and 1970s US auto engines and one inline six engine from a Datsun(? I can't recall). Merely helping friends and acquaintances in the past.

        With quality machine shop access, I can remove the engine and disassemble, leaving the bits at the machine shop for metrology measurement and machining where needed. Bits returned with quality seals and gasket and bolt together with torque wrench.

        As for oldguy, Any 1989 non-turbo long block would do. One out of a later 940 (squirters, oh boy!) maybe. Can pull the engine and get it checked. Though the yard usually punctures the oil pan as part of fluid drain. Get the oil analyzed if any remains. Drop the pan. I find engines for sale on craigslist, usually mated to the transmission.

        If we knew where oldguy was located, we could help him find locally owned and (we hope) honestly trust worthy RWD Volvo oriented support for none too $$$.

        I hope, from the armchair and in-person, help oldguy and son get back into their 1992 Volvo 240.

        Unless Mr. Yount mentions a method for inexpensive engine swap!

        I'm a purist though. I like the RWD Volvo engine in the RWD Volvo best! No need to go fast as stock RWD Volvo travels the speed limit just fine!

        The sensation of a Miller High Life Light lager and Stag lager hungover and Aldi (better then Walmart) brand instant coffee makes for unusual sensation and some blathering.

        The NHL Blues lost. Ha. Stupid sports in dumb-dumb town during this stupid pandemic. Go around and see people at bars not distancing, no masks, and general unkempt state. I stay outdoors, masks, and away from people. Gotta watch the air mass direction so one is not downwind. I remind folks to cover their noses as the mask straps stretch with use. I use bandannas as masks. "This is a stick up! I'm buying all your buttermilk and stinky cheese!" While at a dairy products are us store. Dairy is so much better out West in WA state. Prairie Farms brand milk here is all corn fed cow milk.

        Go Canada, BC, and Vancouver!!! A civilized nation. Go Vancouver Canucks!!!! Don't like professional sports. Go Seattle Seahawks!!!
