engine crossmember

  •   REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE    EDIT   PRINT   SAVE

    sorry guys,
typing error and wrong keys which shot the message off to the board prematurely. And yes, I do need one, cheers. The question I wanted to ask as whether it's possible to adapt a crossmember of a 1990 240 diesel to take the B230F engine. I suppose they're not the same, are they ? I've been offered one in very good condition but short of taking out the original, rusty one (and immobilising the car that way), I cannot really tell.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Pierre

The crossmembers are the same. The difference is in the aluminum brackets and the motor mounts. -- Dave

Fantastic, thanks very much ! I can get the crossemember then and tear the suspension apart as I need two new shocks anyway. The diesel crossmember is like new because the VW diesel on top of it leaked onto it for years and coated it.
I am very indebted to you sages on the Brickboard as I regularly consult this site to keep my two 240s (and those of friends) on the road for sustainable driving. I plan to keep both as daily drivers forever and improve them along the way. Better to keep a repair industry going than plunder the earth's resources with new cars, and the 200/700/900 series are, in my humble opinion, up there with the best for sustainability.

Many thanks again, hope I can reciprocate one day
        cheers

Keep in mind-if there are any thoughts of using the struts from the diesel-that the diesel front springs are much heavier than the 4 cyl springs. - Dave

thanks Dave, I'll bear it in mind. I'm rebuilding spare struts from a petrol 4 cyl. B230F like mine, once all the parts are together and either renewed or refurbished, I'll swap everything out.
Once the old stuff is out, I'll refurbish that and put it away for when it will be needed. currently reduilding another, identical 240 so this might go in there in due course.
Many thanks once again, much appreciated

              "....wrong keys...shot....off...prematurely."

Not to worry -- with the internet being what it is, it happens to all of us at one time or another. (grin)

As stated - crossmembers the same; got a buddy who swapped a V8 into his 82 diesel, and I into my 82 gasoline --- same crossmember for both swaps.
