Trailer Hitch 200

Just replaced both sets of wires for the tailgate hinge on our 89 245 only to discover that while the wires were not healthy it was really the ground wires on the hinges causing problems. :(

Anyway. Once upon a time IPD had a gorgeous trailer hitch. Like 3" round pipe that was elegantly curved and fed a 2" receiver. Sadly they don't have that anymore.
The only hitch I can find is ugly (oh well) but has a 1 1/4 receiver. What the heck? So now you need an adapter for 2" anything (like a four bicycle rack) which pushes the rack out another 8" which really helps put a ton more torque on the hitch, pushes the bikes further out of the slipstream (which makes a huge difference when the speed limit is 85 MPH) and makes me wish my wife was no longer in the Army and I could just get a tubing bender and make those components that made these cars the legends that they are.

Ok, now that I have finished my rant does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!
Andrew

You can find the Volvo trailer hitch for sale on craigslist and eBay and elsewhere.

I'm unsure where you are in North America. I'll hazard guess US.

Much as I don't like mentioning facespacetoobbook, the St. Louis Vintage and Rwd Volvo (Link is https://www.facebook.com/groups/1420025614980046/) has an OEM hitch with some rust on it.

    Class II I guess? ....

Forum thread lists two part numbers:
    https://forums.tbforums.com/showthread.php?t=115852

The Sarasota FL craigslist advert has a DrawTite brand hist for 240:

    https://sarasota.craigslist.org/pts/d/north-port-volvo-240-trailer-hitch/7179637407.html

In Boston craigslist, another draw tite:

The earlier Volvo design that appears much as you describe from iPd. Volvo PN 1333761.

    http://yahoo.aleado.com/lot?auctionID=o344753605#enlargeimg

So I found one in Denver craigslist using Bing search this time. (The new Microsoft Chrome Edge browser is terrible.)

    https://denver.craigslist.org/pts/d/denver-volvo-240-trailer-hitch-assembly/7187080327.html

eTrailer makes them new, yet using a 1.25" receiver. I read someplace the 2" receiver as with the Volvo hitch is better. I'm unsure.

I have a hitch on my 1992 240 GL sedan with prior owner well-abused M47 II. Never used it to tow. I think it is a U-Haul class II receiver.

Else, I'm unsure. Found a few for you. eBay has nothing. The (I hate to mention on the Brickboard and AWservice) facespacetoobbook marketplace may help you. Maybe ask at Turbobricks in their classifieds? The Turbobricks classifieds got nuthin'.

iPd also has classifieds yet those classified are not so active. I forget my password to their login into them classifieds.

    Hope that helps.

Tried joining the facespace group for the STL trailer hitch. I think I am doing something wrong.

Do you have visibility of the hitch? Can you send me their contact info? (is that even how face space works?)

      Thanks!

      Andrew

      Trailer Hitch 200

The original Volvo hitch I purchased around 1984 had bent round tube and 2 inch square tube and ball.

The tong weight was 300 pounds if I remember well.

We often had 4 bicycles on the hitch rack and I tested the strengh safety margin by putting my own weight as a 5th bicycle. Just did not want that fail on the road.

        Those hitches are well made!

And IIRC have the 2" square receiver for the ball assembly.

I'll bet makes for a super swell instant bicycle rack like that!

Thanks for all the good leads!
The wife is actually doing an away rotation in StL. I will talk to her about joining the group to see about that hitch.

Sometimes my googling doesn't work too well.

Oh yea and good luck uninstalling the Edge Browser! HA!

Hope you're able to get a trailer receiver.

There is the rear valence that sort of wraps around or obscures the rear muffler or resonator. You may need to modify or remove it to accommodate the receiver. The Volvo hitch may co-exist with that rounded tubular version of the hitch.

On my 1992 240, a prior owner savaged the plastic rear valence to accommodate the trailer hitch they installed. I'd hope to use it for a small camping or utility trailer / caravan with a 245. Yet it is some after market receiver hitch with a 1.25" square that receives the ball assembly. Else, I'd remove it and give it to you. The receiver is sort of rusty also.

The receiver hitch secures to the unibody using the same securing hardware used to secure the rear hydraulic bumper dampers. Yet what ever the prior owner towed was way over weight as the trunk floor metal around the two sets of securing hardware is wrinkled or distorted.

The prior owner applied so much torque as the box structure the two sets of securing hardware (bolt, washers, nut) as to distort the box. I'd hope to find some sort of sleeve at each hole inside the box to prevent that.

The Microsoft Edge browser installed and de-installed just fine. It is all the Microsoft branding and integration to Microsoft services I did not care for. I use Mozilla FireFox, Google Chrome, and Opera 12.18 (the last Presto browser for JavaScript free browsing). Don't care at all for Opera Chrome browser.

Always clear the browser cache. I like Raymond Hill's uBlock Origin ad-blocker. Also use Raymond Hill's uBlock Origin Extra in Chrome (maybe merely Google Chrome) browser. Mozilla FireFox has a new anti-facebook extension named "Facebook Container" to halt tracking by that evil empire. Amazing all the websites that set a facebook cookie so your i-net use is tracked.

        Happy Sat-Your-Day!

          MS Edge 200

Don't expect more than a temporary reprieve from Edge. The core of Edge is an intergral part of 10, so you didn't actually uninstall it in the traditional sense. At best you disabled it in the registry, changed program defaults and eliminated it from menus. At the next major Win update it will all be restored and be the default program for some file types. Trust me I've tried as I similarly hate it -curse you Microsoft. Ref. assorted blogs and Winaero Tweaker for more info -love Winaero. I also prefer and use Firefox, although it was more customizable up to FFX 58, also faster.

            MS Edge 200

            Hi Dave and Andrew,

            Thank you.

Sort of imagined Windoze 10 would integrate the Chrome Edge browser into the OS. Yet they should not do that. You'll recall the US antitrust suit against Micro$oft to separate Windoze and Internet Explorer some time ago.

On the fated Windows 7, no such issue. On an install of Windows 7, you need Internet Explorer early in the update and restart rounds to install Microsoft Security Essentials. With all the updates installed on Win7 64-bit here I use Mozilla FireFox and Google Chrome all in current versions.

Despise Windoze 10, the distributed updates unless a metered network connection is on, and the Setting app yet you have the Control Panel also.

I recently had a three week engagement with Mac OS 10.x.x.x.x.x. Utterly terrible. An OS UI designed by the Crapple Computer marketing group.

            Preference for Mac OS 9.2.2.

No fan of the MS Office change in 2007 to the ribbon. Extras clicks to accomplish the same task through the Office 2003 and earlier menu structure.

MS Office 2010+ includes hardware video acceleration. Makes MS Word and sometimes Excel to be very unstable.

Anyhoo, back to the job search.

            cheers,

            Technical Writer dud.
