Another Cruise Control issue 900 1993

Problem with erratic cruise control.
No problem activating cruise when car is at 50mph and less.
Car performs very well with no surging, a good ride.
However, when 51-52mph and above and the set button is pushed, the
vehicle accelerates quickly and the cruise control immediately shuts down.
Checked everything that the FAQ had to suggest and found all codes came back
as they should. Using a Vacuum pump checked for integrity in the system
and found no leaks, having held the system under vacuum for a long period.
Checked vacuum pump operation as outlined and its also ok.
Cannot find similiar problem on the brickboard. Works ok at one
speed level and refuses to operate at another!!
Any suggestions or insight.

If you reach your foot under the brake pedal and hold it up, will it work at the higher speed?

Pretty much the first thing I tried, several times, but
the problem is not in the brake vacuum switch. There are
no vacuum leaks.

When it doesn’t work at the higher speed, will it still accelerate if you hold the set button in?

yes that is correct, when set is pushed anywhere above 51 plus
mph the vehicle rapidly accelerates ABOVE the desired speed and then
shuts down. Wondering if there may be a fault in the control unit,
although others have said its rare that you would have a problem with that unit.

Hi,
Here I go again, out of my comfort zone!

Let me see if I understand this correctly, that you are using the set button to accelerate up and the set it? Nah, I know I’m confused?
That should be the Resume button, if held over long enough!
I don’t like trying to use it that way! Just too remote of a feeling to have the car grunt!

I thought it was Set to make the car coast or slow down until you release it.
In some cases, if not most, you have to push it again, to set it, at the the now newer slower speed.
It doesn’t remember a slower speed automatically!

If you slide the resume out it will wants to go to the faster or shut down. Maybe it loses where to go back too!
It really doesn’t like commands from the stalk switch unless it’s in a specific order!
When the cruise is first turn on, by the ignition switch or by the stalk switch, its programming waits for the first set point command, after, it knows it’s above 35 mph.!
You said it’s working from lower but not after 51 mph with acceleration switches?
That might be the rub?

The easiest way is to tap the clutch pedal or brake pedal, to drop speed and then, hit resume and it will accelerate back to the previous preset.

To accelerate you should push the gas pedal until you get up there to it with the throttle cable slack controlled.
The controller will pull on the throttle then and probably overshoot. You will feel less stiffness of the pedal when it engages.

I have no proof but I imagine that there is a lag time limit using acceleration to set buttons.
Maybe part of fail safe thinking?
Any discrepancy or disruptions from the speedometer and the driver using the set button for speed RISE is not well set in the program perimeters.
Set works for steady speed readings or going to a slower speed reading.

The Resume / Accelerate button is for resume up from a slower moving speed to the memory set speed. It’s got its perimeter numbers locked in.

The Accelerate part is to be used only for “quick, one second, touch overs!”
The program will “automatically” raise the speed up in one or two mph increments.
This is after each touch over input is recorded in.
The Set button may even move it lower too!
I think most newer units use these two features of “touched over” and not held on!

I have no reasoning to understand why when it’s only over 51 MPH, that it’s just shutting off or refusing those inputs from you?
Maybe more cable length is needed over the pulleys or it’s the cable is bent too much or snagging somewhere?
On late 240’s this was all over the top of the foot pedals below.
I have no idea what 900’s use!

To have Off working, that is always best since, it’s got your throttle!

Phil
