I've encountered a strange issue...
I have 2 1989 Volvo's and the last air filter I replaced was a
Mann C34831 which measures 13-1/4 x 6-1/2 inches incl. the rubber gasket.
However, my other 240 seems to have an air filter which measures
13 x 6-1/4 inches incl. the rubber gasket.
Has anyone encountered this before or has any ideas?

hi kit- an interesting thread. a few years ago replaced my air filter with a fram from wal mart. did have to shoe horn 2 corners a bit but it did go in and appears to seal. wal mart no longer has air or oil filters for 240s. however did use a few f sharps. must be the musician in me. hope all goes well. oldduke

Hiya Uncle Old Duke and 81242DLB21FCA!
I remember squeezing a Fram into the 240 air filter box. They were long-ish yet with some massage of the compliant gasket matter it'll fit!!!!
Thank you for the photos comparing the Mann and Fram filter for 240 air filter box, 81242DLB21FCA!
The local Wally World does not sell the Fram and other filter brand models for Volvo 240. Sometimes they can.
Those Mahle filters I got were sort of $$ from a local so-called import auto store in south Saint Louis county. The region is bereft of a good import auto parts store. Used to have some good stores here yet Imparts and the Parts Barn and some other place closed. Walter's Foreign Car service sells parts yet they can also be $$$. Walter passed a long time ago so not quite the discount.
Yet online the parts are cheap! Mann, Mahle, & what have you. Rather go to a real store.

I realize this thread has to do with fitment. I've used filters of a number of brands. Some fit perfectly, some fit with some squeezing involved and sometimes I've had to trim a bit. In the end they all worked. But I'm surprised that there hasn't been a single post regarding the efficiency of the important part--the filter paper itself. I don't have an opinion on the matter and do not have any scientific info but I know there are posters on the Board who do lean heavily towards evidence based decisions and wonder if there something more to be learned. - Dave

my air filters mainly keep the mice from building nests near the latent heat left when the AMM does its burn cycle.
the only time I checked and then changed the air filter was after driving in caravan down dusty Colorado and NM dirt roads.
And my innate mental airfilter sensor was correct. the filter was very very almost clogged dirty.
10 years later the engine burned the #4 cyln exhaust valve.
I used Fram filters.
(ps...it's a joke. but you never know these days.....again IT'S A JOKE___U can Laugh NOW....HAHAHAHA)
Cheers

I'm starting to wonder if moisture/humidity may have something to do with the variability in air filter sizes, even within a brand, making them at times a bit difficult to tuck into the box. The paper filter is of course a bit fluffy to let air pass and that makes it naturally absorbant. With all those folds molded into a nice flexible rubber base, a little expansion and contraction from being extra dry to being in a humid environment, either pre- or post-manufacture, could make for such differences.

Over the years I have used several different brands which are equivalents and fit but are all actually slightly (as in 2 to 4 mm) different.
I guess if you want the OEM quality and size, Mann Filter C 3483/1 is the one to go for. The size - as specified by the manufacturer - is 335 x 165 x 37 mm (13.2 x 6.5 x 1.46 ").

Those look like the correct dimensions for the Mann C3483/1.
However, it does not fit properly in the plastic box.
As I said before, I have no issues fitting the Mann in my other 240.

Curious..are the airboxes the same part number?

That's a good question for the OP. Those air box clips are very breakable so a good chance something has been replaced from another year/engine that may not be exactly the same. As others suggest the cartridge filter rubber lip usually has a fair degree of forgiveness depending on the brand, typically +/-1/8" to +/-1/4". I've mostly bought Mann filters over the years and often had filters that are a bit too snug or loose in the box slot, but by the time the cover is clicked down there's a good seal.
Mann (a known OEM to Volvo) lists the C43831 (C4383/1) filter as the correct fitment for the OP's 1989
size 13.19" x 6.5" x 1.46"
cross referencing to Volvo 1326352, 463505 and 463640
fits Volvo 240 B230F 1985-1993, B23F 1983-1984, B21F 1980-1982 and a couple of carb'd/diesel variants
For additional reference here the 1989 Volvo parts fiche shows
#5 Air filter p/n 463505 (NLA, supersedes 9438216)
fits Volvo 240 B230F 1985-1993, B21F 1975-1978, B20F 1977-1978, plus a few carb'd variants
#3 Air box cover p/n 463503
fits Volvo 240 B230F 1985-1993, B21F 1975-1978, B20F 1977-1978, plus carb'd variants of those years
#6 Air box housing p/n 1336925 (NLA)
fits Volvo 240 B230F 1985-1993

'81 242DL with B21F. I don't have the exact dimensions but some filters have round corners such as Mann C34831 where as a Fram CA4365 has square corners. This Mann will not lay flat in my air cleaner. It bulges out and I have to crush it down to get the cover closed. The Fram drops in perfectly and the cover closes easily.

Strange... The Fram C4365 shows up on Amazon as 6.67 x 1.79 x 13.46 inches.
So it's still too large. The Mann C34831 on Amazon shows up as:
13.39 x 3.96 x 2.26 inches, so the width doesn't make any sense.

fwiw
80 and 87 240. Framm and Wix during the life. Just put them in and close the two covers together.
It's not more than crimping rubber surrounds to get the seal.
What's the issue??????
If you can close the 2 together... the business PART is between. aka the Filter.
Good lord...it's rubber surround... not a steel bearing tolerance measured in microxxxxx
