Wondering if anyone knows the best cam for a B16 engine with Judson super charger.

Being as the B16 has the rather weak 3 bearing crank it's best not to overstress it. It will bolt onto a standard B16A or B16B but the higher compression of the B engine probably best avoided. I believe that some if not most of the b16's used the same A cam. I'd have to look that up in the parts book. The A cam will be fine. Do you have the whole kit with all of the parts, including the oiler?
This combo is more a show piece for short runs and displays now days rather than being thrashed in a daily driver. Rather rare!

I have three turbo Saabs and two turbo Volvos. Swedish Steel rules. They were already using the PV engine for their Swedish tractors. I'm sure cast iron engine can take the Super Charger. I have a Judson Super charger for my 56 VW Oval 36 hp engine. Don't think I want to install it on the 36hp engine. My Volvo B16 Judson super charger is complete, less the special cast aluminium hinge. .The beauty of the Judson is it doesn't boost while just cruising. Only when you get on it. Unlike the turbo waste gate valve, the Judson compression blades need centrifugal force to lock in compression. Just cruising the blades slack off. I have two B16 engine and switching out the 3 speed trans for a 4 speed.

Perhaps you like to talk to Rob about the Holley carb on this B16 Amazon with Judson. He wants info on the accelerator pump as doesn't seem to work. Check him out here. Like me he is in the UK. Judson even rarer here.

Have you considered looking at the pommy cars of a similar config with a similar engine for guidance? SU's are 1st choice for blowers.

I don't know much about the older Volvo donks, I'm a B18-B30 guy. First thing I investigated when I got mine B18B 142S was to look at the easy install of a B23, but I looked at the head & had it flowed & it is a complete POS with no cheap fixes.

SO: How much does the head flow? How many RPM's? How many $$$ ? Boost? Fuel?

SU's: They LOVE the smooth pull of a blower.

CAM: Depending on octane & compression especially, you need a much longer exhaust lobe + you need to keep the LSA wide enough to not loose too much air fuel down the exhaust.

Hi, I don't have an answer on your cam question but wanted to ask about the performance improvement you are getting with the super charger? Does it provide more torque? Higher top speed? I'm asking because my 445 came with an uninstalled super charger. It is missing the mounting bracket and may need to be refurbished. Also what type of carburetor are you using? Thanks JD.

Sorry I can't answer your camshaft question but I have owned a car with a Judson supercharger. It was a 1960 AH Sprite with the 948cc motor. The original output was 48hp. The car weighed 1360 lbs and from a Road & Track road test in 1958 turned 0-60 in 25 seconds. My car could do the same in 10-11 seconds which put it onto the range of the 1275cc Mini Cooper which was rated at 75hp and weighed a little more than my roadster. My estimate was the Sprite was making something in the 65-70hp range. As the supercharger is belt driven the faster the motor goes the more power is made. I do not recall what single barrel carburetor was on the Judson but a single barrel from a Plymouth Valiant would probably do it. If you do use yours be sure to monitor the amount of oil used from the oil reservoir. Have fun! - Dave

I have the marvel piper with the drip site glass window. I rebuilt the bearings and seals. I am missing the passenger side replacement hold hinge. I'm fashioning another spare stock hinge as the kit one was casted aluminium.Single Holley carb.

Nahtanha - A suggestion occurs to me regarding your camshaft question. Years ago I needed to replace the cam in the Oldsmobile aluminum 215 V8 in my '76 265. I found a number of sources but the leading aftermarket guy specializing in these Olds/Buick/Rover motors listed 12 different grinds. He (ex-drag racer) gave me a recommendation based on my description of use that was at the radical end of the spectrum. The manufacturer was Crower so I contacted them too. Their recommendation was at the other end of the spectrum. Went with Crower directly and could not have been happier. I don't know if they still offer such direct assistance but worth a call or email. - Dave
