What is this? Exhaust thingie? 900 1995

This came rolling out of my right rear wheel fender yesterday. I suspect it is some kind of exhaust insulator but would like some confirmation.

I should have looked at your profile before I wrote my comment. When I reread it, I think that it might have been a bit stern - I apologize for that.

It is obvious by your profile that you care for your cars and also participate in the Volvo community.

No offence taken James. Your comments were received as helpful and useful. Since then however I have learned that the part is not a heat shield so there is no danger to the car to run without it. Spook supplied me with the part number and its name. Some kind of sound deadener I suspect. It is over a hundred to buy a new one so I think I will try to fix up this one and get it back in its proper place.

First - it is a necessary part of your car to keep it safe - you really should replace it

Second - its mounts should be obvious if you look along the exhaust system. Check other heat shields as well.

I suggest that you find the mounts and see if you can remove them - then get a new piece or repair the one you have.

You could shape a patch somewhat larger than the holes and use pop rivets to attach the patches. Use very short rivets designed to attach sheet metal together.

      Hello James,

I am taking its loss seriously. I would not want to heat up the gas in the tank. Could be explosive!

Thanks for your suggestions. I will leave the car sit over the remainder of the weekend and then see what I can do.
