PV544 Radiator 444-544 1963

Hello All,

My radiator seems to be about toast. The fins disappear like dust when touched.
What is the best way to proceed? Replace? Rebuild?
I like the rebuild idea, but I'm sure there are some specifics that need to be addressed with a radiator shop.

Any enlightenment on that would be appreciated.

If it is better to replace - then what about that and who has the correct ones.

Thanks
Bob

First find a radiator shop that is willing to do it and their final price. Rad shops not so easy to find now in most places.

X10, Aluminium is rubbish for radiators. 444-544 1963

X10, Aluminium Radiators are rubbish, most people don't know that you must store them with corrorion inhibitor in them when not fitted to the car because they corrode so quickly & aluminium oxide is a very poor conductor of heat.

        aluminum radiators are rubbish?
My last 30 years of experience with toyota's would argue otherwise.

You got an aluminium radiator to last 30 years? I doubt it.

I have 50 year old Brass ones that are near good as new.

OEM, aluminium radiators serve the same purpose as McPherson struts: They are cheap.

AFTERMARKET, aluminium radiators are for people who like shiny bling stuff. But I except that sometimes you need one for a special purspose.

Just don't ever leave one out & empty for long.

        Paul;

ALL Cooling Systems, not just those with an Alu Rad, should be operated with the standard %50 coolant mix which has anti-corrosive additives... but I totally agree that Alu Rads are rubbish...and I'd like to add one more important factor to the list of downsides of the Alu Rads: They are RARELY repairable, unlike a brass Rad. Visit any Rad shop...they all have a mountain of nice, shiny (but JUNK!) Rads awaiting going to the recyclers...

        Cheers

I've never needed anti-freeze, had a -3°C morning once in the last 25 years here, BBBRRRRR! Rain water & a dose of corrosion inhibitor is all I need, the B18-B30 cooling system is so good I've never had a functional radiator cap.

if its the b18 (by the year 1963, it should be), there are reproduction aluminum radiators. i bought one like this a while back for my p1800 and it seems ok.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/50MM-Aluminum-Alloy-Radiator-Volvo-Amazon-P1800-B18-B20-engine-GT-1959-1970-M-T/313317405401?fits=Make%3AVolvo&hash=item48f32c32d9:g:O5IAAOSwZB9aH7HT

if its the b16 nose, i managed to get this civic radiator to fit my 61 544 with a little modification (it has a b18 engine in it now):

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/401588152860?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=401588152860&targetid=1068323858830&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9028303&poi=&campaignid=10454522096&mkgroupid=104612011900&rlsatarget=pla-1068323858830&abcId=2146002&merchantid=6313274&gclid=CjwKCAiA65iBBhB-EiwAW253W8VLagu50e4hp6xzCIrfhwZrSqfyvvukMy4hN1hjLiLGEW4F1YUjwRoC0iMQAvD_BwE

Of course if you want to stay stock look, then the usual suspects can supply oem radiators.
