B30 engine issues? 140-160

I'm looking at buying a 164, I've had many other Volvos, but not in several years. One Volvo friend suggested there are issues with the B30, yet all it is is a B20 with 2 more cylinders AFAIK, and those last forever. He's gone quiet on me, so I don;'t know what he means.
Anyone want to enlighten me?

There is no real problem other than the D-Jet parts are hard to find and/or expensive.

Make sure you get a manual, the BW35 automatic is a gas guzzling slug.

Thanks all. My friend was referring to the difficulty in finding gasket sets for a B30, and of course DJet parts.

As far as that BYW35, I was thinking of swapping to the AW70 (I think it is)or if I feel ambitious, a M410 swap.

        Hello,

Gasket sets are still available as are most if not all of the special to B30 individual gaskets and seals like oil pan, cylinder head, valve cover and intake/exhaust manifold gaskets.

Although most of the D-jet components aren't available new except for NOS(New Old Stock), there are workarounds for all of them including having some items like the ECU and the vacuum pressure sensor rebuilt. There is now a replacement PC board to repair the throttle switch which we install and test ourselves.

We can still get new water and air temperature sensors and new main injectors. A reproduction wiring harness is also available.

New cheap universal fuel pumps are available, but require modifications to install, sometimes needing an inline fuel pump check valve. These cheap fuel pumps usually don't last long so we sell a brand new high quality replacement fuel pump that is almost a bolt in replacement. The only extra work required to install this fuel pump is the removal of the wires from the plastic insulator attached to the end of the stock wiring harness.

The main injectors can be serviced and restored to operating condition as well as the cold start injector.

I believe there is a replacement set of contact trigger points that might be able to installed on the original mounting plate, but it appears to be very expensive. The correct version of the 123Ignition distributor has the trigger contacts built in and is a probably a better overall alternative.

The thermal timer for the cold start injector can be bypassed for cold starts.

Right now, the main obstacle is the lack of a known good easy replacement for the fuel pressure regulator which is the later version.

We have a bolt in aftermarket non-Bosch replacement for the later fuel pressure regulator that was intended for a BMW, but it isn't adjustable and we haven't had a guinea pig customer car to test it on yet.

There now is a reasonably priced replacement for the early style of fuel pressure regulator used on the 1970-1971 Volvos with D-jet that is adjustable and we have sold a few and installed them and they are in fact a bolt in even using the original mounting nut. It would require some mods to the hose routing and fabricating a mounting bracket, but I'm pretty sure the early version fuel pressure regulator could be installed instead.

ONLY if it's the reprogramable 123. In the 1st version, ALL the stock curves are of NO use.

The Datsun L28 regulator would be my first choice, if you can get it: Two hose barbs in, one out same as standard, set to 36psi & is has a vacuum reference house. Retune the MPS & you are good to go.

Someone posted a link to a L28 Datsun fuel pump which is a replica of the Bosch original. Ofcourse an old K-Jet pump from the 74 B20E/F or the first B21E/F 240 donks would be fine too.

GREAT TO KNOW you have new circuit boards for the TPS!

          GOOD WORK ERIC.

B30 engine issues? 164 green manuals in PDF and ... 140-160

All green manuals for each 164 year and other stuff:

            http://www.240.se/litteratur/service100.htm

            BW35 manual:
            https://volvo1800pictures.com/sweden/Volvo_1800_dokumentation_main_page_en.php

I'm not well-practiced at auto boxes the the BW35. You can apply adjustments to brake bands, servos or something to gain efficacy. Yet to enjoy and apply the B30 torque a manual gear box with final drive ratio consideration at the differential will improve economy and performance.

Take care if you like high speed. The 164 is a wing cross section and does gain lift the faster you go. About 130 MPH is the limit. Consider ground effects like an air dam at least and maybe upgrade to ventilated front rotors.

I don't care for facepuke, the way the site discriminates against the Brickboard and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Yet you may want to ask at the facepuke 164 forum.

You'll need, regrettably, a facepuke account to access:

    B30 engine issues? 140-160

    Hello,

The B30s are basically a B20 with 2 extra cylinders and there are a lot of interchangeable parts like pistons, rods, lifters, distributor drive gears and more and they can be just as reliable as the B20s and the cars that they came in.

However, the 164s and the B30 engines do use some parts that are exclusively for the 164 and since Volvo made far fewer 164s, some parts are hard to find or are more expensive.

For example, the 164 upper control arm bushings were originally only available through Volvo as no one made them in the aftermarket and Volvo discontinued them many years ago. Reproduction upper control arm bushings for the 164 are now available, but a new set of 4 bushings cost over $700.00.
