940 turbo exhaust manifolds interchangeable? 900 1992

There are at least two type exhaust manifolds that will fit a 940 turbo. One has round pipes and has reinforcing ribs between the 4 inlet ports, and one has rectanguler pipes and no ribs between the 4 inlet ports.

Does anyone know whether these two exhaust manifolds are interchangeable? I'm sure the inlet ports align the same, but would the same turbo fit both manifolds, and would the outlet from the turbo to the exhaust pipe align the same?

I have a 92 940 turbo which has the exhaust manifold with the round pipes, and I'm wondering whether the exhaust manifold with the rectangular pipes is a direct replacement. My exhaust manifold is cracked.

    Years ago when my 740 cracked. No replacement found. Called machine shops for a welder recommendation. One guys name came up a couple times. He charged me $20, never cracked again.

    Dear chrisbradberry,

    Hope you're well and stay so! Volvo VADIS - a superseded dealer parts/service database - shows only part #3514440 - for a turbo exhaust manifold, from 1991 through 1995.

    I checked each year separately. As the parts diagram has two sections, each showing an exhaust manifold, I verified that one manifold diagram is for a turbo and the other manifold diagram is for a non-turbo-equipped engine.

    These results suggest - but do not prove - that pipe format (round or square) and rib/no-rib do not affect fitment.

    I hope others, who have worked on turbo-equipped engines, will provide the benefit of their observations.

      Hope you're well and stay so. I should have added that replacement turbo-compatible exhaust manifolds can still be had from U.S.-based Volvo dealers, for about $400-450.

        Thanks for the research and info. Fortunately, I found that my exhaust manifold wasn't actually cracked but instead the #1 exhaust port gasket was leaking under certain conditions, and when it leaked it blew a narrow stream of exhaust onto the manifold and formed a streak that looked like a crack. Once I removed the exhaust manifold and buffed it with a wire brush I could see that it was not cracked, and I could see where the #1 exhaust port gasket was not sealing as the other exhaust port gaskets were. I replaced all of the exhaust port gaskets and reinstalled the exhaust manifold and turbo. That seems to have corrected the problem, at least for now.
