940 DRIVER WINDOW REPLACED BUT WRONG SIZE DOOR ON CAR 900 1993

Hi Everyone! When I bought my 1993 940 several years ago, I had the driver-side door replaced. A few months ago, I needed to replace the driver-side window assembly, and the glass stuck up about 1/8 inch or so (wouldn't go down the whole way), which I thought was strange. Now the window is dragging so much that it's getting stuck (wondering if humidity is an issue as well). I'm thinking now that when the door was replaced, it wasn't for a 1993 940 wagon. The VIN is very scratched out on the door. All I can see from the original door sticker is that it was assembled in Canada 10/92, has GAWR front 2075 lb, and GAWR rear 2170 lb. Does anyone have an idea what make/model/year the replaced door is? I need to get the proper door glass for it. Hoping the shop will honor the repair. I even pointed out about the window not going down the whole way, yet they didn't seem fazed by it. Any insight is appreciated, and it's my hope you all have been well! Susan

940 DRIVER WINDOW REPLACED BUT WRONG SIZE DOOR ON CAR 900 1993

Hello,

As far as i know the driver's door on any 940 (sedan/wagon) are the same. They are interchangeable. No issues. As to why your window wouldn't fully go down/slow in operation, you must investigate what's the issue first. Need to dismantle the door card/panel and have a look inside. Its unlikely to be an issue with the window glass or door (unless door came from accident car - distorted frame).

Common culprits are worn window gear mechanism and worn/weak window electric motor (the driver's window is most used). Yes they can be worn and tired after 20+ years. Both items could be replaced as a set without replacing the entire door. Lots of these are available on the internet (eBay for example) for around $50-$75 for a good used one.

Just carefully select the proper one from 1993 to 1994 cars for driver's door because the mechanism is NOT interchageable for any other door in car. Mechanism from 1995 to 1997 cars also the same but with different electrical plug for the motor. Just cut this out and rewire the old plug from old motor.

Usually metal rivets are used to secure/fasten the original factory window mechanism to door frame but you could easily drill these rivets out. Then use 8mm bolts and nuts to secure the newly bought mechanism back to door frame.

Amarin.

940 DRIVER WINDOW REPLACED BUT WRONG SIZE DOOR ON CAR 900 1993

Hi Amarin! Thanks so much for your reply. I'm glad you say that the doors are interchangeable. I checked my owner's manual and saw the same GVW and other weights that match a 940 Turbo sedan, so that must be where the door is from. When I had the glass replaced, the motor was replaced as well (or whatever it included what a whole assembly; I couldn't just replace the glass).

It's odd that the window wouldn't go down the whole way after it was replaced. I showed the mechanic at a reputable shop that works on older Volvos, but he didn't think much of it, although I thought it was strange. The window worked fine from October of last year (when I replaced it) until just a few days ago.

I will dig a bit deeper, and I greatly appreciate your thoughts!

Check the window 'guide rails' for damage/obstruction 900 1993

Dear smfree,

Hope you're well and stay so. The window glass slides on vertical "guide rails". These are parts #6848637 (left) and #6848638 (right). These should still be available from Volvo, at a cost of some $16 (retail) each, at a U.S.-based Volvo dealer.

A mis-aligned or damaged "guide rail" could well cause the glass to move slowly (or not at all). So, when you pull the interior door panel for inspection, see if there's something at the bottom of the guide rails, that stops the glass from descending before the top edge of the glass is flush with the top of the door panel.

When the window glass is completely raised, use a 1/8"-wide (or narrower) flat-blade screwdriver, to probe the guide rails' "pocket", into which the glass fits. There could be a small piece of debris caught in the "guide rail", that creates the problem.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks very much, Spook! You've helped me in the past. It's been a long time! The 940 is still going strong at just short of 320,000 miles. Hoping you're doing well and stay so also! Susan
