Availability of OEM radiator for B230 900

It looks like the medium size radiator is no longer available from Volvo for the 940.
I bought a new radiator from Volvo, specifically for my vehicle and received one marked 8603899.
When I took the old one out it was marked 8603901 and it was slightly smaller than the new, not so tall. Engine is B230-FD, N/A and manual with ECC.
I could not see how the new radiator would fit and I thought I had received the wrong part.
After a bit of thinking and checking I realized it might fit after all. I greased the rubber grommets on the short ends of the hole in the front member, pressed hard and managed to squeeze down the radiator in the hole.
I think Volvo has dropped 8603901 from stock to cut costs.

I am not familiar with any of the parts numbers, but know there were at least two different radiators on the 940's.

The radiators on the turbo cars are in fact larger (taller) than the NA cars.

Just to be clear: You received a radiator that was taller than the original, but were able to install it. Is your car normally aspirated?

There are (were) at least three sizes available, small, medium and large.
Mine used the medium size, full width but not full height. When mounted it protrudes down through the front cross member.
I guess the large was used on turbos, the medium on n/a cars with AC/ECC and the small on n/a cars without AC/ECC. Probably the last one is rare on the US market.
So a medium size rad was replacable with a full size one.
Yes it is a n/a engine.

While I kinda of understand (really, it would make sense to just have one radiator and then use the thermostat to adjust for the different needs) them making different radiators for the different applications, why don't them all fit in the same car? I really thought there was just one 940 body; it makes even less sense to have the radiator hole being different (unless this was a Honda). That requires different parts.

What were they thinking?

Dear Mila,

Hope you're well and stay so.

Part #8603899 is available from a U.S. seller: https://www.fcpeuro.com/Volvo-parts/940/?year=1994&m=20&e=914&t=5&b=6&d=34&v=84&keywords=8603899 .

They may have "old stock", i.e., when they sell what they have, they'll not be able to replenish.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Hi Spoke!

It's the other way around, #8603901 is not available, #8603899 is and it's what I got.

Dear Mila,

Hope you're well and stay so. I sit corrected: thank you!!

Perhaps the rad-maker (Nissens?) decided to slim their offerings.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
