1990 760 Turbo Wagon. Was driving along and car felt like it wanted to stall. Needed extra gas to rev it to get it home. Felt almost like it was the MAF and was starting to go into in limp mode. Very groggy. I thought it was the MAF so I cleaned it and reset the idle, I also cleaned the throttle body. Took it for a drive the next morning and when I started it and put it in reverse there was a whirring sound that lasted a few seconds. It drove very slow and wouldn't drive over 10mph. When I got back there was a pool of clear viscous liquid below where the transmission and engine meet but slightly towards the right side. The car starts and idles fine but does not drive faster than 5 mph. Would it be rear main seal? transmission? Please help and thank you.

Is your coolant looking totally normal these days? Full as usual and the right color?

Clear fluid is not transmission fluid, or not transmission fluid alone. Is it possible your transmission is overfilled?

Worst case you were seeing a mixture of coolant and transmission fluid that overflowed from the top of the transmission.

The right side of the engine at the engine/trans split is where the transmission lines sit under a clamp that tends to wear a hole in the lines. Check there as well - you may have to unbolt the clamp to see properly. - Dave

Here’s the trans cooler line clamping that Dave refers to - I just happened to have a pic from a posting years ago. This was either our 1990 740 or 1992 745, I can’t recall which. Both cars were NA if that makes a difference, but I doubt it does.

Drop the transmission pan and replace the screen and pan gasket. Replace trans fluid with Mobile 1 transmission fluid. Disconnect the transmission radiator line to flush the new fluid through the torque converter..

flush the fluid w cheap stuff,,run it for a week & THEN switch out Mobile 1..

get 1& 1/2 times the capacity of ATF,,merc 5 or better,,flush 2 qts out through the return line from the cooler,,replace 2 qts,,flush 2 replace too use the cheap stuff first drive it around for a while & then replace w good synthetic stuff,,,
