244 Exhaust Manifold Stud Loose 200 1985

I noticed that the nut had fallen off of the stud that connects the bottom of the exhaust manifold to the downpipe (which then connects to the cat).

I went to reinstall the nut but realized that the entire stud was loose and only hanging on by a thread or two. The stud won't thread back in as the threads on the stud are damaged however. I was able to flip the stud around though (just as a test) and start threading the other end into the manifold which confirmed to me that the threads in the manifold side seem to be OK still.

A couple of questions for the group:

1.) Does anyone know the best source to purchase this stud and what type of metal I should be using?

2.) Assuming the threads are still good, how does one tighten the new stud in place? I assume that maybe I need to lock two nuts together and tighten the stud in place, and then loosen the nuts off. Is this easy to do without turning the stud loose again in the process of backing the nuts off?

3.) What type of nut should I be using? The nuts seem different on each of the two studs.

    Thanks all.

After purchasing a new stud, I have realized that it is not threading into the manifold properly. I can get a few threads started and then the stud just spins without advancing any further. My guess is that some of the threads in the manifold itself are damaged.

Looking for some advice at this point. I am not sure if there is adequate working room to tap new threads (or to chase chase the existing ones), but I am concerned that if I try to tap the same size M10 threads that I will remove a small amount of metal such that the stud will not fit tightly when I manage to get it installed.

Does anyone happen to know the thread pitch on these studs? Thanks

Might be easier to source another manifold.

Is it difficult to crack the nuts on the manifold mounts loose? I am up for trying to remove the manifold but am nervous about breaking a stud or something. Any tips would be appreciated! Thanks

Bring the damaged stud to a parts store (an old time private store is my choice) to match the stud to an exhaust stud replacement. I would also buy 2 plain nuts (for the stud installation) which could also be used for the final installation -- or see if they have the type self locking nuts that have sort of a squashed look to them if you're concerned about it loosening. - Dave

Thank you for this info! Is the best approach then to jam the two nuts together and then use them to tighten the stud in place, before then breaking the nuts free again?

if your stud isn't too bad you can chase the threads with a tap, and if stuck just cut a bolt off and use the threaded portion. if you are fussy you can use new parts and do it right. if stuck without wheels, it's not critical. just use a bolt.. swap it later. id take one from a parts car..any auto place should have studs and nuts..

If possible, use copper coated locknuts.

If you can't find them locally, we have them in stock.

      We also have the studs.
