Old ATF Change Post for 700s applicable for 1993 through 1995 940s? 900

Does this post from Fitz Fitzgerald back in 2005 for 700s apply to 940s?
http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=904267

Also, which of the radiator cooler line connections would I hook the clear plastic tube to, step 9?

I'm planning on changing the ATF on our 940 non-Turbos.

Yes, that very much applies to your 940 with an AW71 trans. Fitz's writeup is excellent and his comments are well taken.

I would defintely recommend finishing with a flush through the trans cooler line. The procedure is described in slightly more detail here in the FAQ
Volvo 700/900 FAQ: Trasmission Fluid Flush
You attach the clear vinyl tubing (about 4'-6' long is ideal) to the trans cooler return line nipple (top one) on the rad. That fitting can sometimes be a bit difficult to loosen so be sure to use a counterhold wrench to avoid any possibility of cracking the plastic even though it's soldily attached through to metal tubing inside the rad. Having the wrench handles offset and squeezing the handles together can give you increased leverage to crack the bond with minimal risk of twisting the line or the nipple.
Suitable vinyl tubing can be purchased, and often by the foot, at hardware stores like HDepot and at many plumbing outlets, especially those that specialize in irrigation and pond systems.
Note the recommendation to use marked milked jugs to match the re-fill amount to what's coming out during the flush helps make it easier to avoid overfilling or accientally running it dry. Be sure to run the trans through the gears a couple of times during the flush, pausing for a moment at each position. Having an assistant does make life a little simpler to avoid running back to turn the ignition off and on during the flush and to run the trans through the gears -just be sure they have their foot solidly on the brake.

Great post Dave Stevens, just what I wanted to know!
I am now debating replacement of the cooler lines while the AFT is out. Mine are really rusty on the transmission end (Minnesota car for many years, lots of salt). I wonder where they are available?

Dear jd620,

Hope you're well and stay so. I'm pretty sure the transmission coolant pipes cannot be had from Volvo. These are parts #3547995 and #3547996. I supply the part numbers so you can check with your local Volvo dealer. A salvage yard in a desert state (e.g., Arizona, Nevada, or southern California) may have them.

As to Dave Steven's characteristically thorough post, I'd add that the in-radiator automatic transmission cooler is made of thick-wall copper tube and the nipples - that go through the radiator side-tank walls - are also quite stout.

Even so, using two wrenches - one to turn the steel hex fitting and the other to hold still the large brass hexagonal nipple - is 100% sound advice. What you don't want to do is to break the seal between the brass nipple and the inner wall of the side-tank.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks for the info. Spook.
The cooling fittings with the large brass nut are on plastic radiators only. I have both metal and plastic radiator 940s. I am a little concerned that the all metal radiators without the counterhold nuts may develop a leak if the connectors are loostened without a counterhold. I believe the male fittings to the cooling lines are soldered or brazed to the upper tank.
I did drain the transmission on the 940 I wanted to replace the oil and which did have a metal radiator, refill (about 2 qts.), drive a couple miles, and repeat the draining and refilling. I used Mobil 1 ATF. The ATF did clean up fairly well (not great) after this procedure.
I appreciate getting the cooling line part numbers. With 7 of these old 940s in the family and running, I may need to find some cooling lines.
