Replacing the evaporator on a 93 240... how bad is it? 200 1993

Greetings BrickBoard.

I have been trying to fix the ac on my 93 240 since June and I have chased leaks all over the engine bay. After replacing most of the lines in the engine compartment as well as the condenser I have found one final leak at the evaporator...
How hard it is to replace on a 93? is it the same hellish nightmare as replacing the blower fan?
Can it be done without removing the whole dash and heater box?
Are there so useful tutorials out there? I found some only about the heater core
Thank you for your insight

    Abatta,

You can not just pull the evaporator out of the heater box, it needs to be completely freed from the firewall and the floor as the pipes from the evaporator pass through into the engine bay.

You need to pull the heater core/box far enough from the firewall to slide the evaporator out, then slide in the new one and then push the whole unit back into position. However, I would take this opportunity to clean all the leaves and debris out of the fresh air vent and heater box.

    Just my two cents.

      Thank you Matt

The more I look into it and the more daunting it looks
But don't have a choice if I want to enjoy AC next summer

      Cheers
      André

That firewall panel does come loose, but it sure looks like it would be scraped knuckles trying to get the innermost bolt and nut from behind the heater box without pulling it loose too.

Prefacing this with "I haven't done it" I still can assure you the mechanical part of replacing the evaporator is not as involved as replacing a blower motor, or even a heater core done by chopping up the housing. In fact, I think it will be 5x as easy as finding an acceptable set of leather skins on the used market.

The evaporator comes out the side. What I can't tell you about is how much work it is to get the hard line aluminum plumbing out of the way. You can see something of what this looks like if you wanted to get the climate box out of the car without disconnecting the evaporator by scrolling through these pics of a heater core done on a '91.

It just has to be easier.

      Hello Art
Thank you for taking the time to reply
Haha I hope that finding those leather seats won't be that hard haha

I did look at that link and he seems to be taking a different approach since he is not disconnecting the evaporator in order not to loose his ac gas
I hope that I can find enough wiggle room to move it out and not having to take the whole heater box out
I was told though that since I was already playing in there doing the heater box might not be a bad idea...
Things are jammed pretty tight in there
