Wash DC and surrounding MD and VA nearby counties were once upon a 240 time, in a tight competition with the Seattle-coastal Oregon-Portland area, for the highest per-capita Volvo ownership in the USA.
Neck and neck for many a year.
Volvo 245s were the goto-nanny mobile for transporting the precious cargo to a fro, around Chevy Chase and Fairfax.
During that time I was buying and driving used Beamers (2002s), some I knew at work were picking up very nice used Volvos from the DC suburbs. 164s, 140s, 240s.
The listings in the Sunday Washington Post under Volvo for Sale always offered more than a few.
My last buy, an 87 245, was from a lawyer which he bought new for just under 20 grand.
Of course, this was all before Volvo went for 'style' instead of longevity/safety as a selling point, which failed to stem the competition from the MiniVan-SUV, and resulted in Volvo selling the brand to Ford....and then, rather than that '80s pop song " I'm turning Japanese"-----'turning Chinese.
Thanks to the DC area's winter weather pattern---snow/mostly ice-rain line, which migrates north and south with weekly regularity and the copious amount or salt that gets dumped to 'make the roads safe' ---- the abundance of Volvos of that era ----Vaporized.

To those that thrived and survived.
Still appreciated by a new generation.
