1993 Rocker Trim 200 1993

Are there any tricks to mounting the rocker trim molding? I'm about to do it the THIRD time. Hopefully, I have enough clips left to do the job. I've been going through them as if they were popcorn and they are not getting any cheaper.

Every other time, when I think it is as secure as it can be, my size 13 heel will bump it as I get out and soon I am back to ground zero. The only difference this time is that the trim piece is now wonky, Thankfully, I have a decent one in the hoard.

Thanks, one and all,

Rich (near The Burgh)

Hi Rich,

It's been a while.

If the molding is coming off leaving the clips behind

Mark the back of the molding at each clip position

The flanges on the metal channel are often bent outward where the clip was.
Using a stand for support , set the molding in a vice inside up. At each clip position straighten the flanges and then squeeze the molding in the vice so that it takes some force to move the clip into position. It may be necessary to tap down in the center of the channel with a punch to get the sides parallel.

If the clips are coming out with the molding, add a little 3M molding tape to the hole.

The clips should be at least 80*F plus before hammering on them.

Tap the molding with a rubber hammer at an upward angle so that you hit the molding at 2 places simultaneously. If you just hit the upper section that protrudes the most, it tends to rock the molding and loosen it.

I think most of the problems are due to the shape of the stainless channel. If everything is right, the flanges get bent inward on installation and provide some spring tension to keep it tight to the body. If it's loose after being installed, it wont be on for long.

I often use Dave's suggestion on winter cars. 8MM plugs are available at my hardware store or McMaster Carr in black or white. Cover with spray on rocker guard and then paint.

Good luck, Peter

I think the best trick would be to get rid of them altogether--snap a plastic plug into each hole and be done with it. I've owned 140 and 240 models since 1978 and my method of extracting these old bones from those models is to brace the calf of my leg(s) against the rocker panel to help launch myself out. The later 240's with the trim molding are painful to the back of my legs. I'm now driving the VolvOlds (1993 245, Olds 215 V8) with those darned trim pieces - my first Volvo with them. They may have to go soon. - Dave
