Hi Brain,
What a shame, I just had the starter out of my 1993 240 a couple weeks ago. I could have measured it up for you. The 900 has the same red block engine setup of a PMGR 108 series starter with a nine tooth clockwise Bendix drive. That is, unless they really got crazy and made the backside of those engines different!
If the 900 is anything like the 240 you cannot lose the top bolt due to the transmission tunnel gets in the way of moving it straight back.
In fact you cannot leave that 18mm socket on the head and get the whole bolt unscrewed.
So I see your problem but all is not lost.
You can measure the thickness of the two flanges and add about one half inch to it for it to come out the front on the other side.
You can check for diameter size and thread pitch by turning another metric bolt in from the front side. If you can see the thread sticking out on the top bolt, lay the thread tip of another bolt down the length of what is sticking out to match the pitch
If I had to guess it has and I’m having too because all my extra starters are up at the other house, a fairly coarse thread with a diameter of 12 mm and a pitch of 1.25 or 1.5 mm would be it.
Both bolts should be the same length or at least are on my M47 in the 240’s.
I would go and get the measurements but I don’t like laying under a car anymore as my car lift is also up at the other house!
Sorry!
Phil
