Exhaust Manifold Studs 700 1988

I'm changing the exhaust manifold gaskets on my 1988 745t.

Three of the nuts came off OK, but five studs unscrewed from the head. Those threads look clean.

Probably because I didn't pay attention and use the correct (nickel) anti-seize on the nuts 13 years ago.

I'll use new studs and nuts. What, if anything, should I put on the studs going into the head. FAQ's suggest "high heat removable Loctite" Which Loctite would be best for this? Or maybe some other 'stuff?'

And, how tight should the studs be in the head?

Thank you, chuck

    Hi,

    15 foot pounds.

I like the copper self locking nuts.

Could be I have yet to read through all those 7/9 FAQ entries, but Loctite (I assume you're talking threadlocker)? Man, I love it when the studs come out of the head nice like yours -- no way would I want to do anything that might prevent that.

Of course I want them to stay in until I remove the nuts to change gaskets, but there's where I've never had an issue. The turbo hardware is under a lot more stress than n/a exhaust manifold studs and nuts, so I went for the genuine parts (black nut above and studs) and left the copper jacket nuts for the non-turbos, and definitely Volvo brand gaskets. I think the nickel anti-seize helped to save some struggles taking them apart again.

Art, Hello, would you mind measuring the stud, 953048 in your picture?

The ones that came out of my head are all 55mm with about a 13mm unthreaded portion. Had around three threads exposed outside of the nut.

So far I've gotten: From one company-35mm (returned); and another company- 45mm with about 8mm unthreaded.

In both cases the websites said "Yes, this fits your car" and was confirmed by a sales rep. The part number was different than yours on both.

volvopartswebstore.com/ has 953049 listed for NA and Turbo.

eEuro has the 953048 online, I'll see if I can get then to measure it.

The manifold flange is about 13 mm where the stud sticks through; seems to me it would be better resting on the unthreaded part of the stud.

Maybe I'm overthinking this but would like to do it right- not again.

I'm about ready to follow Greg's advice, but with new nuts.

      Thanks very much, chuck

        Hi Chuck,

Looks like I have a collection of M8 studs, but the only ones remaining identified by part number are those I ordered for a 240Ti according to the Volvo fiche:

So total length 48mm. I figure the unthreaded part is more for the manufacture of the stud than to serve a purpose in its use, other than locating it where no threads would be required. Just my opinion. An uninformed one at that.

          Hey, Art and everyone.

I'm a little late to the party, but I have some info for these.

I believe the short studs are for a turbo flange to manifold. I remember there are 3 different sizes and different unthreaded areas. The unthreaded areas usually are where the removable part (manifold or flange) fits. The turbo flange/manifold is thicker than the standard exhaust manifold, so it has a longer unthreaded section. I've run into using a stud with a long unthreaded portion before, and had show up as the nut bottom out on the non-threaded portion without touching the exhaust components.

As for the antiseize, I never use the standard nickel antiseize on engine parts. I use the dark grey high-temperature stuff that sticks to everything and never comes out of your clothing ... ask how I know! Haha

          Hope you're well!

Sounds like you experienced a WIN. The anti-seize worked great, nothing broken.

You can do whatever you like, but if the stud/nut 'assemblies' look good, I'd just reuse them and do whatever you did the last time except maybe use a better exhaust manifold gasket...

Greg, sorry, was trying to reply to Art.

On my way out to remove the nuts from those studs.

      Thanks
