Radiator Replacement 900 1997

Hi Folks,

I have realized to have a coolant leak at the top hose of my radiator, so I am waiting for a new genuine one to come in.

I know that I need to be very careful to not to tight too much the hose clamps, but I wonder, does Volvo give the exact torque for those clamps?

That would make the task much easier.

Thank you!

Alex

Radiator --HOSE------ Replacement 900 1997

For what it's worth---I've driven 240 Volvos since 1983.
For a majority of that time I've never used a 'Genuine Volvo' Radiator Hose.

You can probably still get a top radiator hose to fit from a well stocked local parts store.
Gates is a good brand.

I don't mean to sound over-dramatic, but if possible don't drive the car if the upper neck is already leaking. Those things can suddenly blow open and you lose a LOT of coolant in a SHORT period of time. I know this from the time my wife called and told me there was a lot of steam coming out from under the hood and the temp gauge pegged hot.

I have no idea if Volvo does this or not, so I just googled for "radiator hose clamp torque".

A ball park figure is given: 30-40 in lb (~ 3.4 - 4.5 Nm). None of my torque wrenches go this low, so instead I just tighten the clamp until the hose STARTS to bulge around it.

Hi there,

I found the same information, that is exactly what I will do.

Thank you!

You nailed it. Tighten the clamps just enough to seal it. Do NOT over tighten!
