1994 940 Sedan-All Doors Locked Lifting Drivers Door Handle

My daughter strapped her 10 month son in her car seat, right rear, of her 940 sedan, lifted the driver door handle outside and all doors locked, her key inside. We made a run over to where she was with an extra key and unlocked the driver door.
This has happened a couple other times, months ago, where she lifted the driver door handle and all four doors locked.
We are worried this may happen with the baby locked in and it is a hot Summer day.
Is there a place I should begin looking to repair the driver door latch or ?
Thanks!

If your trunk is like our 740s, there is a rubber drain plug in the trunk floor portions outside the rails for the rear bumper.

I removed the plug and reinstalled it to be sure that I could get it out if it need be.

Then I put an extra key inside a baggie ant taped it near the plug (inside the trunk).

My daughter actually used the emergency key when she was working for Ducks Unlimited in Foam Lakes Sasketchawan - we were in Massachusetts and could not help her.

I put spare keys in all our three 740s.

hi james,

long time, no see.
how did your daughter get the key if central locking locked the trunk/tailgate
too?
i talked to a locksmith recently about buying a magnetic device to hide a key
but his response was not very encouraging.
maybe there's a good way to cement a key somewhere?

cheers, bill

Hi jd20

This happened to me, and was one of the chronic problems reported by the previous owner. The recognized cure is to replace the drivers door latch assembly.
The bad news is, that it's not available.

I bent the link to the drivers door lock button so that it would bind slightly
on the bushing for the lock button. Remove the driver's door panel to do this.

Since last summer it has not misbehaved.

I do keep a spare key in my wallet.
Probably it will keep behaving until the very moment that I forget my wallet
or lose the key.

Good luck, Bill

I spent time today looking in my Chilton's and Haynes books for the fuse that protects the door latches. I was hoping that fuse would not disable too much if I were to remove it.
Anybody have an idea which fuse that would be?

Fuse 2 is for central locking.... disabling it is one solution

Fuse 2:
Hazard lights
Headlight flasher (via fuse 17 and 18)
Central locking
Anti-Theft Alarm ?? (who has that?)

What you want for a wiring diagram is a Volvo service manual:
TP 3904202 Wiring Diagram 940 1994
It's 173 pages including subsystem wiring diagrams and component locations.

I found the 1994 940 manual as a PDF file on the web (27MB too big to e-mail)
I have a valid link to this manual. See my profile and email for the link.
I don't want the link to disappear.

Good luck, Bill
