Source for OBD port Pins ? 900

    Dear B.B.

Hope you're well. If you refer to the wire terminals that fit into female sockets on the OBD ports, that terminal is Part #1212901. I'm not 100% sure as to fit: the terminal's inside diameter is 3.3mm, i.e., about 1/8".

Volvo VADIS - a superseded dealer parts/service database - shows several such terminals. Each terminal has a different diameter, as one would expect.

I'd guess there terminals are still available from a Volvo dealer. Indeed, a dealer parts department might have a compartmented box, with a wide range of terminals. If so, you could pick several. They're not likely to cost more than $1 each.

If part #1212901 turns out to be correct, please post back with that finding!

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Volvo kit FOUND for OBD port Pins and other applications 900

      Hi Spook,

Today I went to the Volvo dealer and the bad news is that there's about 15 different Volvo pins
and no specs or drawings showing where they go, and none are in stock.
The Good news is that they have a repair kit 3523813-8

This used in many areas of various model Volvo's including 940 corner lights.

The failure of the OBD port I had was that the rubber insulator around the
pin dried up disintegrated. Now the pin was still good but the insulator
around the pin disappeared so the pin either pushed back and you got no connection,
and/or could pull up and out of the holder with the probe attached.
This is a failure mode that should be in the FAQ

The bottom of the OBD connector has an "Insulator" where you need to release
an arm or arms to insert the pin and insulator then latch it to hold it tight.

I'll look at that later, I do have a photo of the corner lamp socket arrangement, that has a socket
and insulator block to hold the pin & insulator (Not the same insulators)

(The photo shows a repaired pin that fell out of a light socket insulator)

Getting the corner socket insulator out of the socket is with two standard latches.
Releasing the pin and rubber insulator has one standard release for the single wire on the right.
But the left side has a two pole locking arm.
I released it with a jewelers screwrdiver through the little access hole on the left.
It may be better to spread the two surfaces with the green marks with a screwdriver
to release the single latch arm that gets grabbed on both sides.
It's important to understand how these latches work,
since the plastic insulators are only plastic and NOT available.

It's hard to see the latch release scheme from the photo.
I haven't tried releasing by prying the two green marks apart? Any Idea?

One last thought is that in my old lamp socket here, the pins are solidly
stuck on the lamp socket pins, corrosion for sure.
So any effort to service pins should be after a treatment of a little mystery oil overnight
so that you avoid making more damage on dis-assembly.
If it doesn't come apart easily, give it the MMO soak.

If you can look up Volvo numbers in your Vadis,
      please check these two numbers:
967695 Pin (This might be the right number)
949371 Insulator (should be replaced with the pin)
Who are the OEM pin manufacturer/s? AMP?
These parts shouldn't be so pricey.
Compare Amazon's price for the kit with Volvo list... :-)

      Bill

Source FOUND for OBD port Pins 900

        Dear B.B.

Hope you're well and stay so. Thank you, for this report!

It might be worth $8-12 to fix a single OBD contact.

But I'd still like to know if the OBD wire terminals are available and, if so, at what price. You confirmed that the one I suggested had the correct diameter. I'll visit a Volvo dealer and see if they have / can get the terminal and price.

To separate corroded wire terminals, use Deoxit. This is an aerosol corrosion-remover for electrical contacts. I'd apply some on several days in a row. This will allow the solvent to work its way through micro-channels in the corrosion. I'd then use a needle-nose pliers gently to try to turn/pull-apart the connectors.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

Source FOUND for OBD port Pins 900

I bought two kits to fix: 1. bad OBD port pin and 2: busted corner light pin.
For $18.10 + tax . The kits are pricey but terrific since you also need to
deal with the rotted insulator around the pin when replacing pins.

Did you find those two numbers?

Skandix sells a similar kit to fix corner light connectors
that includes the cable (pin and rubber insulator)
(same cable needed for OBD port)
the inline crimps and shrink wrap
and the plastic insulator that volvo discontunued.
But it's 17.9 euros and 50-100? euros more for shipping to USA

Source for OBD port Pins ? 900

      Hi Spook,

      Thanks for the nice response.
I measured the diameter of the male OBD port pin as 0.139"
      3.3 mm = 0.130"
Maybe that's the right pin. since it's a split spring socket pin.
I'll check with the Volvo dealer Friday and report back.

      Cheers, Bill

        Dear B.B.,

Hope you're well and stay so. You're welcome!

Sometimes VADIS makes it possible to differentiate very similar parts. Unlike the housings for wiring harness connectors - where diagrams aren't always precise - the diameters given for wire terminals are helpful.

        I await your report.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook
