Cutting a u-joint when the bearing cap went through the wrong side

1990 740

I herped when I should have derped and ended up pushing a new u-joint's bearing cap alllll the way through. Now I can't get the cap back out the way it came and I can't get the cross out of the yoke.

What's the easiest part of the u-joint to cut? The polished surface where the bearings ride, or closer to the center? These are non-greasable (read: sealed) u-joints, so the center is not hollow.

I ended up not cutting it and yanking on it to get it out. I just really didn't want to goof up the yoke. Seems like it was all okay, I grabbed the cap with a pair of pliers and whacked it with my hand.

I wish my posts didn’t wait so long to appear in the thread. It makes me think I didn’t submit it. So I repeat it. Then I end up with two identical posts.

Can you put the opposing bearing cup on and use it to push the center cross and the errant cup back where they belong?
