240 overdrive issue 200 1989

I have a 1989 245 with the following issue; OD lockout light intermittantly comes on by itself, and car drops from OD to third. Am taking a 500 mile trip and do not want to do it with an unplanned loss of 4th. gear. Has anyone, and or, is it possible to "hot wire" the solonoid? I was thinking of putting a switch on the dash to send 12V to the solonoid, until I can properly repair or eliminate the OD solonoild. Otherwise, it shifts smoothly.

The overdrive relay is tucked in to the left of the glovebox.

Remove the glovebox and access the relay. Probe the wires with a test light to find the wire that supplies the solenoid.

Install your switch between a 12v source and that wire to the solenoid.

If the source of the problem is between the relay and the solenoid then this won't be the fix you need.

wiring in the shifter is probably broken. the direct method you describe with a switch will work fine.
