A/C compressor bi-metallic thermal switch...BAD! 200

All,

How necessary is the bi-metallic thermal switch on my a/c compressor??? Can a replacement be sourced???

It is now preventing my compressor from functioning properly.

Is it fine to just bypass this bi-metallic thermal switch and just wire directly into it? Any issues with this?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

    All,

So the concensus is that this bi-metallic switch is needed for the compressor to safely operate.

Therefore, does any one know where I might be able to procure said switch?

    Thanks in advance,

Which bi-metallic thermal switch? What year; you've got several all with different AC.

      hahahahahahaha

      That's my response there Art!

Glad to hear you're still around.

Yes, I have several, 4 to be exact.

I'm referring to the square bi-metallic thermal switch on the compressor itself. Its bolts to the bracket and the wire runs through it to turn the clutch on and off.

      Is that a better explanation?

      Thanks in advance,

that's the diode for the clutch. if it's blown, likely the clutch has been drawing too much current due to wear and fatigue. compressor time.

          Porkface,

Compressor is new, diode is from previous compressor as the new one did not have it. Actually none of the rebuilt ones come with them, at least not the ones that I have purchased.

          Can I just bypass it???

no. the diode is to prevent voltage spikes when the clutch is turned off. art can speak better as to why it's problem but consider this-if it wasn't required, why bother with 1 in the first place?
