Yazaki odometer repair 700 1991

My car is a 740 turbo. The speedo works but not the odometer. Could this be caused by leaking capacitors or can I assume it's a cog with a broken tooth? If the latter, is it necessary to access the cog by first removing the needle followed by the speedo dial followed by the two screws behind it? There's an excellent writeup for the previous year at
http://www.volvotips.com/index.php/740-760-780/tutorials/how-to-repair-the-740-tripmeter/ but the Yazaki is quite different in 91.

I don't know anything about Yazaki odometer cogs, but I can tell you the capacitor leakage issue can affect the odometer while the speedometer continues to function normally.

Yes, I was afraid of that. I'll inspect the capacitors to see if there's any visible leakage.

      Hi Art,

      That's fancy work and a nice write-up.
Where do you source the replacement caps?
It looks much easier to replace those time bomb caps before they leak,
      thanks for the head's up.
How many electrolytic caps lurk in the ICU's?

      Cheers, Bill

        Hi Bill,

I know electrolytic caps have a bad rep, but it is interesting to me that I've never encountered any problems with them in anything Bosch. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague

My sources are the usual Digi-Key, Mouser, and ebay, but in that 7/9 FAQ link I have in the Yazaki piece, there are Mouser catalog numbers given. Even 8 years ago when I wrote that I thought it was highly optimistic to expect any of these units to be undamaged, but yes, if I would have been a 7/9 owner I'd have gotten in there early. I wonder how many of these became the end-of-life reason for a 940.

Thx for the nice words Bill.
