If memory serves correctly, I believe that's where a slave speedometer cable attached for the Lambda Sond (O2 sensor) service reminder light that was present on some early '80s 240s. It was required in certain markets, possibly just for the early unheated oxygen sensors. It was a separate little black box on the back of the cluster. It illuminated the dash reminder light at 30,000 mile intervals according to owner manuals. There was a reset button on the side. I once tripped over this while documenting reset procedures for the original FAQ here. One of our 240 gurus will surely correct me.

You are 100% correct. I had to replace the fan blower motor, and take out the instrument cluster to replace the needle pointer. I recall detaching the cable from the back of the speedometer. While trying to reinstall everything back, I could not locate the cable. Since everything was disturbed including the carpet, I finally found out that the one-foot cable was displaced under the carpet on the passenger side.

Congratulations on doing your 240 fan blower motor. Give yourself 10 bonus points. Any of us having done that job clearly remember it. It's comforting to know my aging memory on that Lambda Sond reminder isn't totally shot, but don't tell that to my wife when I tell her I forgot to take out the garbage.

Thank you very much. To replace the fan blower motor and the resistor I sure had to take out both front seats, so to make some room.
