Wagon rear side window trim failing 900

Hello all,

The lower rear window trim is trying to escape on both sides and
also some at the front, leaving unwanted openings for water.
I expect this is bad news to allow water, especially salt water in the winter
to get inside the body cavities and promote rusting.
How to repair?
Can it be coaxed back into place maybe with a little heat from a heat gun?
Or is it kaput from old age and need replacing?
Does anyone have a source for this trim?
Is this easily repaired correctly, or do I need to go to an auto glass company?

Thanks, Bill

I've got the same problem on my 740. Also the side window trim. I think you have to get creative. Maybe get some samples at the Pick-n-Pull. X-acto knife w some type of filler. I bet a collision repair or detail shop might be helpful.

Wagon rear side window trim failing 900

      Hi Marty,

There's no nearby donor cars near me now, and this trim has shrunk with old age.
The trim has not only popped up at the ends, but it has shrunk, The rear rear end being at least 3/16" short.
I wonder if the trim pops out in areas free of freezing temperatures,
thinking that it might be winter ice that pushes the trim out.

I plan to visit an auto glass store and see what they have.
I'll post back with any findings.

      Cheers, Bill

    Dear B.B.,

Hope you're well and stay so. These side window moldings no longer are available from Volvo. You might find them at a salvage yard. The part numbers are: 9178080 (L) and 9178081 (R).

If you have a choice of parts, I'd avoid a part from a yard in, say, Arizona. Such a part - coming from an area where ambient temperatures are 90°F or higher for most of the year - are likely to fail quickly. High heat embrittles rubber and plastics.

As to salvaging the in-service part, you might use contact cement to adhere the split sections. Contact cement is a strong adhesive used to attach laminates to plywood or similar substrates. Contact adhesive dries "clear", so won't be very noticeable. You can find contact cement at most home centers, e.g., Home Depot, Lowes, hardware stores.

Apply a thin coat using a small bristle brush. Allow the adhesive to dry. Press the sections together. They should bond instantly.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

That rubber strip is of course starting to shrink with age along the exposed lip causing it to curl up. It's a fairly long strip so one of the first to lift. I've got a couple showing signs of wanting to lift like that. That strip just keeps water and dirt from getting behind the trim. Water won't get into the body unless it rusts and perforates behind the trim, which is fortunately rare in our 700/900s, unlike the early 140/240s with their ungalvanized bodies and spot welded window clips. Clean out excess dirt and tack it back down with RTV or exterior silicone sealant, taping it in place until it sets. Maybe try stretching it along its length with a dull blade to fit closer to the end. Consider lifting and tacking the other end. Armoral is a product that can be used to condition and UV protect such rubber, maybe masking tape the glass to keep it clean.
