144 pedal box removal 140-160 1967

I have been slowly switching over a '67 144 from a BW35 auto to a M40 manual trans setup. I ran into a snag trying to remove the pedal box from under the dash.
I have the steering wheel out , the drivers seat out, drilled out that rivet looking bolt that holds up the steering column to the bottom of the dash and also removed the brace that held the auto trans selector bar that goes through the firewall.
The automatic trans pedal box is nice and loose but is hung up somewhere below the instrument cluster. Do I need to remove this instrument cluster to get this old pedal box out ?? I'm not as agile when I was young but I'm trying ...
Any advice to get this bugger out would be helpful.
Thanks, Duck

I assume you’ve removed the cotter pin and clevis pin that connects the brake rod to the pedal. Have you removed the pedal pivot bolt and the pedal itself? That might give you more visibility to what the hang-up might be. You may have to loosen the brake booster from the firewall and pull it, along with the brake rod, forward to allow the pedal box assembly to drop down.

      Chris,
Yes I have pulled the cotter pin and barrel that is attached to for the pedal.
I was thinking of removing the "tuning fork" for the pedal also since it seems to be impeding the pedal box removal. I wonder if I could pull out that long rod from brake booster from inside the car or is that threaded in there ??

The four bolts that hold the brake booster to the firewall have been removed also.
Just seems to be something under that instrument cluster that's binding.

      Thanks, Duck

        Hello,

There are more bolts that hold the bracket to the body and they are behind the dash.

I can't remember if you have to pull the instrument cluster to get to them.

However, it appears that you don't need to change the bracket as it's the same whether the car has an auto or a manual transmission and all you need to do is to install the brake and clutch pedals and associated hardware like return springs and the clutch pedal stop onto the existing bracket.

The 4/5 speed brake and clutch pedals are the same for all 66-72 left hand drive 140s.

WOW ! That would save me a ton of work by leaving that automatic bracket in there. Thanks Eric !!
I will need to inspect both brackets more carefully to see where the clutch pedal and brake pedal will attach. I will take a look maybe Tuesday when it warms up a bit more. Right now we are in the teens and no heat in the pole barn.
          Cold Duck.

“… I will need to inspect both brackets more carefully to see where the clutch pedal and brake pedal will attach…”

The Haynes manual has a beautiful rendering of the whole assembly. I tried to upload a copy of it the other day for you to see but the BrickPix page isn’t accepting images right now. Jarrod said he is trying to update it to be more secure. I don’t have any other image depository to house it. If you would like it I will need your email address.
