Sounds like a simple job to remove the front grill on a 1968 144 but it isn't.

Took the 2 Phillips screws out from the top easily and tried to loosen the two Phillips screws on the bottom to no avail... BUT...I don't think that is necessary, since that should just pull up while it's riding on those pins which are loose enough.

I do see 2 phillips screws on the outside edge of the grill between the headlight and the fender edge. I don't know how I could get in there or even if that's needed.
Any help is appreciated . Jerry

2 screws up the top, then two 7/16" AF nuts up under the mud guards. EVERY grill since the one piece has been a POS.

Those screws you see on the side retain a bracket that has a threaded stud that goes into the core support.

There are other attaching points. See if you can access the picture in the link below.

The url weblisher link doesn't show the grill area just front steering and suspension.
After removing the running light next to the headlight ....I can see the bracket that you speak of that hold the 2 phillip screws next to the headlight.

Do you think that I can get at that bracket bolt from inside the fender well without too much trouble ?

I forgot the early 140 grills were that different from the later 140 I had (also shown pictured), similar to the later 240s. I was wondering what you guys were talking about that was more difficult. No suggestion it was a couple of half turn plastic studs on top and off she comes.
Eric, I forget my old 122 grill mounting, it's been 50 years. Looking at that schematic, thoughts of similar tabs and screws are slowly comning back here. Am I right in remembering it was extemely similar and about as involved as the early 140 mounting?

The early 140 1-piece grille is a bit of PITA to R&I with all the fasteners and brackets.

The 1964 and earlier 122/Amazons were also a bit of PITA to R&I as each side grille assembly was comprised of metal grille and separate outer trim surround with a chrome cross bar on the outside of the front panel and a bar behind with screws that went into the chrome cross bar to hold everything together.

The later 2 style of 122/Amazon grilles are so much easier to R&I as they only have 2 screws to holding each grille.

Eric, aha, I had the later two grill style on my 1966 122S, so that's why no red flag in the aging Volvo corner of my brain. Thanks
